Do you mean when you take the tuner assembly out, the hole drilled into the neck is square and not round?

And holy crap. What the hell is that beast on the left wearing? It's like a strat with some sort of huge, white baby bib on it. I can't stop staring at it.

that would be a Squier 51 on the left. They are currently discontinued, but were real hot for a while. Check out the Squier Forum here. I believe there are many websites devoted to modifying these things.

If I'm interpreting your question correctly, you want to replace those 'modern' tuners with vintage ones.

Here's what to expect: Per head, you will have two holes in the wood (in the back of the headstock) which prevents the 'modern' ones from spinning around. They won't be visible with vintage retrofits except for the low E. However, the post holes are larger for the 'modern' heads which means that the bushings for the vintage tuners will have no wood to grab onto and the posts themselves will have a lot of play (wobble). The imprint left by the trim washers used for the 'modern' heads around the post holes will not be covered up by the vintages bushings. I've also seen some guitars where due to placement of the OEM modern heads, installing vintage ones would require the posts having to be lined up with the uppermost part of the hole (meaning closest to the edge of the headstock) in order for the vintage heads to clear the edge of the headstock for usual tuning. And if this be the case, those two aforementioned holes per head in the wood, well, one each will show and the other one will be way oversized so that it will not accept the vintage screw to hold the vintage head(s) on. Lastly and for your convenience, to remove the 'modern' heads by unscrewing the post sleeves, the size of the nut driver required is 10mm.

I can imagine a whole lot of people would want to "modify" these things.

Especially when they were being closed out for under $100!

I think the lowest was $50, but you didn't get a choice of color.

Hi Cowboy: in addition to what Martian said, just take a glance at this thread:

(to save me typing it all out again).

Cheers - C

Thank goodness! Someone else who thinks that the '51 is as ugly as homemade sin.

They do sound pretty cool, but they be "fugly".

Oh yeah. Easily one of the most truly ugly guitar-like abominations I've ever seen in my life. That pickguard is the most wretched thing I've ever seen.

I'm sure it sounds good, and might even feel good to play, but holy hell it's hideous!

It's like if a Tele and a Strat had a messed up kid.

Sorry about my previous post. Was only stating my own opinion, I realize I was talking about someone's guitar.
