if the neck is bare with no gloss no need to sand. If there's gloss it wont work. Just rub shoe polish to bare wood to your liking and replace hardware. Let the wood dry and absorb the polish for a few hours. Once dry it wont come off on your hands.

Then I wouldnt temper with it. Unless someone knows a safe way to remove poly from the neck, as far as I know it's bullet proof, harder than the neck itself :)

I just scuffed up my old MIM stat body with a polyester finish using a scotchbrite pad, then "stained" it with ornage hair dye, its held up fine the better part of a year, dont think i'd try that with the tele though, least not right away. Thanks for the replies.

Yea, I wouldnt. I mean a messed up body is still playable but a neck isnt.

Sorry, I meant nothing by that. I meant in the eventuality that the body gets messed up it wont change tone or playability so much. There's always a level of discomfort with anything associated with the necks.

Show us a picture of the body btw :)

Yeah, Ive played a few nice MIM's. But I can really tell the difference. I think the main problem with Mex's is they tend to just be too damn inconsistant. You can play 3 different ones, and they feel and sound like 3 completely different guitars. That being said, I'm sure a proper setup would level the playing field.

No offense taken, more self mockery than anything else. Bear in mind this was a spur of the moment, been up for days, no research no planning undertaking, just bored, was gassing for a shell pink maple board strat, and mayhem ensued.

Not bad, thin coat always looks better in time. I have a 79 with a thin coat of Lake Placid blue. Cant wait for it to age again.

I dont regret doing it, I never wanted white in the first place, and after years of dealing with it, and not being able to justify purchasing my dream strat, figured it couldnt turn out too bad.

I always wanted a color between lake placid and daphne, a friend of mine had an old vort LP copy in a finish close to that combo, it was a POS, but it looked hot.

That certainly gives it more of a vintage look. I'll see if I can post a pic of my Lake Placid blue when I get home.

I love that. Great color choice. I'm an orange fanatic and that's a great "orange pushup ice cream" orange color. The pickguard, the neck - all meshes very well.

Too many "projects" are complete crap, and look hideous. This one is great, love it.
