About two weeks ago I was in my local music store and, bored, picked up a Strat and started plying it. Nice, real nice. Went to a HRDx and plugged it in - even better. The sustain is better than on my '05 American and the neck feels really good. I bought it, took it home, and set it up. It got even better.

I love the look of maple boards but could never play them because they were too sticky. This one is just right. It was deathly white, but a little brown Kiwi took care of that. The pickups are pretty good with a good vintage sound.

Now I have a great playing guitar, it looks beautiful (the color is olympic white, but it looks moe like vintage white), and I saved about $500 over an American Standard.

Sometimes you just pick up a guitar and everything is right. As much as they try to make all the guitars that are the same model feel and play the same they dont. There is always that one that stands out for some reason over the others and it sounds that you picked up that one stand out guitar for you. Enjoy

I dunno. This seems to be a commonplace happening for lots of MIMs (me included). My guess is at that music store, there was much more than just "that one". Just my opinion...

I think the MIM range in general has improved a hell of a lot lately, not that they were bad before. If i compare my Baja tele to my hotrod i just dont see £800 difference in quality infact i struggle to see £300 worth.
Like most things fender i think the Mexico plant is improving with age.

Hey,
I played several American Std strats. Very nice, but a little out of my budget. Too many guitars and the wife would probably castrate me if I bought another without getting rid of something else. I wanted a strat so I traded one of my Ibanez guitars of equal value for a nice used 2005 MIM with the burst finish.
The thing played great and sounded very good. It had a few upgrades including a Duncan Performer in the bridge position and the staggered Sperzel locking tuners.
The next move I made was to trade the Rosewood neck straight across for the one piece maple neck off a '98 MIM. Fortunately, this maple neck had that nice aged tone to the wood. Replaced the neck and dropped it off with my set up guy with a set of Elixir 10s.......... This guitar is beyond awesome. Everyone who plays it can't beleive it's an MIM.

Like I've said so many times, players love to slam the Mexican made vs. the American made models where granted, a lot of it has to do with patriotism and snob appeal. Yet, if they didn't know which models were made where, there would be a hell of a lot more MIMs in circulation with a hell of a lot more completely satisfied and contented owners. It would all come down to the level of frills of the particular model chosen and not fantasy quality issues.

MIMs are great, when you find a good one. You can play an entire musical career with one and never "need" anything else, for sure.

I have both a MIM Strat and Tele and both are excellent instruments. I played many in store, MIA, MIM and Squire versions of all instruments and settled on the MIM versions because they played best out of all the guitars I tested. I really couldn't tell that much difference between the MIM and MIA versions of the same guitar, except for price! The difference was less apparent in the Tele versions versus the Strats though.

I much prefer an MIA, and I can notice and appreciate those subtle difference. But for those that can't, or if it doesn't matter to you, MIM's are great instruments.

My 94 MIM was my main guitar for like 4 yrs, hundreds of gigs, thousands of hours of playing, etc. Had two fret levels/polish done on it since I played it so much. After I got my 98 MIA and played it for while, I could totally tell the difference between them, and there were a lot.

Completely agree ... especially the Tele comment. Even the top-tier Squier Teles play shockingly well, have nice finish details, and nice tone.

Look, it comes down to this. The MIAs offer this over an MIM: a more-nicely finshed neck, a better trem (that most of us don't even use), better choice of finishes, better stock pups (but most MIMs get retrofiited with better-than MIA pups), and a stellar case. So, at the end of the day, as far as the guitar itself goes, the "differences" between an MIA & MIM all come down to the neck details and ... possibly ... a unique finish. That's it ... period.

Did you tint the body or the neck with the shoe polish? I'm getting a MIM tele that has a very pale neck and would very much like to get a darker tint to it, some detailed instructions or links would be great! thanks

Yes, take the neck off and remove tuners and string Ts and apply a very thing coat of brown shoe polish. Make sure to rub it uniformely and only a little bit at a time. Nothing to it really.
