Hi there, new member to the site here :)

I'm the proud new owner of a Classic Player 60s Strat, and I was wondering if the Gotoh Vintage Locking tuners were a direct drop-in replacement ? I don't want to change the look, hence the vintage-looking Gotohs, but I'd like the convenience of a locking tuner.

Thanks in advance for any input.

It looks like your guitar has vintage ping tuners. I'm not sure about the tuners you want but i dont think they will fit. Most locking tuners need a 12mm hole, pings use 8mm.

Hi RedUK, welcome to the Forum.

Like Niki's saying, you need to check the peghole size on your guitar. There are essentially two sizes, 11/32nds of an inch (usually refered to as 8mm or 9mm) and 13/32nds (commonly known as 10mm).

The larger holes are usually found on "modern" instruments, the smaller ones on "vintage" guitars. The Gotohs you want are made for the smaller 11/32 holes. The problem is that although your guitar calls itself "'60s" it in fact incorporates all sorts of modern features, such as the two-point trem and the 9.5 inch fingerboard radius. So an accurate '60s small peghole cannot be taken for granted.

That information is not given in the specs on this site, so you must either email Fender Customer Services and ask, or just whip one of your tuners off and measure the hole.

If your holes are after all the larger 10mm / 13/32nd ones then all is not lost. In addition to your Gotoh tuners you also need to purchase some "conversion bushings" to make the smaller tuner posts fit the larger holes. Take a look at this page:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Tune ... hings.html

However, from your username I presume you are in the UK. So before shopping trans-Atlantic just take a look at this page:

http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/search?q=tuner+bushing

Before purchasing one of those sets I'd just email Ben at WD Music UK and check which one is the right set to go with the Gotoh tuners. Ben is very friendly and helpful. And you can buy those particular tuners from WD too.

And if that doesn't solve your issue then there's also this page at Axesrus:

http://www.axesrus.com/axemachine.htm

You will find Tony at Axesrus also very helpful: he doesn't sell Gotohs but he will know if his bushings fit.

Now there's a fulsome answer for you!

Let us know how you get on...

Good luck - C

Yes Ceri is right on with that info. Check to see what size hole you have in the guitar before hand. You can get the Vintage Gotohs with the 11/32 (or 9mm) size peghead bushings.

That's great info - much appreciated. I'll get them measured up next string change. :)
