Congratulations, I've had mine since it was new and it is my favorite electric.

I bought one of those too brand new when it came out. When they were advertised I knew I had to have one of those 2004 American Deluxe 50th Anniversary Stratocasters.

I got on too! I ordered it as soon as one of the guys in my music store returned from a NAMM show and told me about it. Aot of all the guitars I have ever purchased, this one came with the best "set up" of any of them. The only thing I really did was change the string, which is smoething I always do. They called me when the guitar came in, and let me open the box and take it out to be played. I think that this is the only guitar I owne that I played first after it left the factory. Only one other friend has played it at all.

To my understanding, I am the 3rd owner. I'm a little surprised that nobody noticed the black nut. That has been changed along with the tuners  . They have been replaced with Sperzel locking tuners.
Sperzel are know to be among the best tuners out there, so I'm not too concern about that.

But the nut is bugging me. I do have the original though and it looks great to me. I'm thinking about getting it back in place. The original one is bigger than the black one, well I should say higher. I would like to think that for such an instrument, Fender would use quality material, right? I'm saying this because the black one is worth about $12 (still got the package). So beside ending up with a slightly higher action, do you think it could do anything else (like better intonation)?

I noticed it right off, but figured it was just a graphite nut like a lot of other guitars.

I have sperzels on mine. Love them, but that skinny knob on the back can grind your fingers when you string it up sometimes. I like the actual knob part of sperzels though, very smooth liquid curves, very nice compared to most others.

 well, yeah, I should have said "mentionned" instead of "noticed".

I am fairly certain it came with the Sperzel tuners.

I know the Am Deluxe does.

The one I was bidding on had them too.

If there is a graphite nut on it, it has got to be a good thing for helping it stay in tune when using the vibrato bar, although I have had no problem with my Deluxe just because of the tuners.

WOW...Nice guiar. I know the feeling about burning through strings. I am still going through a set a month playing mine. I think I know what I want for Christmas, Anniversity, birthday, and Father's Day, a guitar just like that one. Nice pic.

The Am Deluxe comes with "Fender®/Schaller® Deluxe Staggered Cast/Sealed Locking Tuning Machines", not Sperzel's. It was also mentionned in the ad that the tuners had been replaced.

I stand corrected.

I researched and you are dead on accurate.

:)

When you looka t them real quick, they do look a lot like the Fender/Schaller tuner.

You actually have a really technically nice instrument.

Just know what you have, appreciate it, learn to utilize it, and make it respond WITH you to make good music.

That is all anyone can do.

That is basically the way I have always approached my music, and believe me, I have been doing it a long long time.

I took an 18 year break from it, basically because I had a really good writer/performer ight on the doorstep of a record deal twice, and he let drugs and alcohol and a really bad sucky attitude cause him to blow the opportunity, not just for himself, but for all of us involved in the projects.

His brother was the lead guitarist in Steppenwolf, Larry Byrom, and Larry was going to me get the project to completion and was going to walk the master tape into Dick Lanier's office at MCA records.

I don't know why I am saying all of this ... LOL

Just know that in a small way I do know what I am talking about and have been there and done that in many ways.

You have a great axe. Make love with it.

:)

Hey Wally, that's a sad story you got there my friend. I 'm new to fender guitars, but not to playing music. Twenty years of playing under my belt.
When my first band kinda collapsed, I did the same thing as you, I parked my axe for almost 6 months (nothing compared to 18 years but...). I believe my stupidity level increased 2 folds during that time...lol! All I can say is never again. I told my wife: "we might break up later on, you may take the house and whatever, but you'll never lay a finger on my guitar.
I was playing music before I met you, still playing while I am whit you and will keep on rockin' the day after."

I know I have gotten myself a really decent instrument and as far as making love to it, well, physically didn't get the chance to try out but
in my head, oh god, in my head...

Cheers!
