So I've had my MexiStrat for a few year now, love it to death, but have started to feel the need to "complete" the arsenal with something humbucker-ish. Perhaps a nice LP, SG or an Ibanez.

Being on a budget, I figured upgrading my Strat with a new bridge pickup might be the best idea. This way, I'll still have the neck and middle pickups for clean and slight overdrive tones, but then a bucker for the heavy stuff.

Here's the question: what are some good choices? I know DiMarzio and Duncan makes those "hot rails". What do you all suggest?

Thanks much!!!

i favour dimarzio over duncan. Duncans have always sounded dulled down to me. Dimarzio offer a better range with more unusual tones as well as regular tones. I used to use a FS2 in the bridge of my mexi strat, ideal for metal but it does muck up the bridge/middle tone.

What do you mean by "muck up" the bridge/middle tone?

I'm entertaining the idea of replacing my bridge pickup with a Dimarzio Heavy blues 2... they sound vintage 70's like on their website ... check it out..

I've got DiMarzio Pro Track single coil sized humbuckers installed in the neck and middle positions of my HSS Strat (Had to go triple fat) and I am very happy with them. Plenty of power and growl. Go to the DiMarzio website and check out the sound sample.

Fender Tex Mex humbucker is quite a good idea
versatile and fits in well with the Mexican Strat's other single coils

Thank you for the idea...Can I get a nice SG-ish/Angus-ish sound with it?

Tutor man ... I don't think it can give you that particular sound ... you should be looking at humbuckers not single coils in that case....
try to hear the heavy blues here

Good Luck

Thank you Hisham...I don't have any delusions of a single coil (even a hot rail) sounding exactly like a Gibson SG...but the idea here is to have something in the bridge position that will give me more of that humbucker crunch without buying a new guitar. With the right bridge pickup, I figure I can still play with the neck, middle and neck/middle positions for that characteristic Strat sound, and then switch over to the neck for some serious punch. Maybe I'm dreaming...maybe not

Thanks again everyone...!!!!

Seymour Duncan Lil '59 and Jr. JB's are a great choice. But if you are on a budget....try this, if your bridge pickup is not wired to the tone pot then do it! You will discover a whole new slew of tones!

Then again, if you love your guitar that much you could try out some more high gain pedals. I use a Boss MT-2, put the gain pretty high up and then search for the perfect setting with the bass, mid and treble. It's a little tricky but once you've found the best tone, you really can get a bad-ass metal tone from just a standard strat single-coil.

This way you won't have change your bridge pickup and still have the classic strat bridge pickup tone when you don't play metal. It has worked great for me

Go over to the DiMarzio website and listen to the Norton or Air Norton. I put in a PAF pro into my MIM because it is a little brighter than the Norton/Air Norton. Matched up fine with the other MIM pickups before I replaced them.

I was just going to say that. I have a single -sized JB Jr in mine, and I can split it to be a single coil when I need it, or a humbucker as well. It has the more versatile tone, still looks like a "strat" and I didn't need to get a different pickguard or cut it up. And when it's in single coil mode, it will sound more like a normal strat than a full sized humbucker that's split, which was very important to me.
