What's the best way to go about it?

1) Remove a string, clean the area underneath it, replace the string. Repeat five times. I figure this would keep the neck under tension.

OR

2) Remove all six strings, clean the whole thing at once, replace the strings.

OR

3) Some other way.

Any suggestions would help. Thanks in advance, this forum is fantastic.

If you wipe down your strings everytime you play that should be good. Maple boards are sealed so they don't absorb oils and other junk like Rosewood and Ebony. Every so often if yoy take all the strings of to give a good cleaning any standard quality guitar polish will keep it shiny.

Holy crap, that's WAY more complicated than it needs to be.

1 - Get new strings and cleaning stuff ready.
2 - Take strings off
3 - Clean neck
4 - Put new strings on

Time shouldn't be more than 8-20 mins or so total. This doesn't need to be so difficult :)

Quite!

And it's never a good idea to put used strings back on (if that is what you are getting at?). Even if you can get the thing tied off on the tuner a second time there's something about completely loosening a string and then retensioning it that means it never holds pitch properly any more. Probably an engineer would have some sort of explanation concerning metal fatigue or some such...

Old ones off, clean the neck, new ones on. Reasonably often, too. Child's play!

Thank you all for the replies. My only concern was neck tension...does removing all the strings have an adverse effect on the neck that might require an adjustment?

It's fine. Some people would not want to leave a guitar without the strings on for months at a time, at least without slackening the trussrod, but just for changing strings over it is not at all an issue.

Clean that fingerboard without worries!

BTW, I reread your first post and think perhaps I misunderstood you when I thought you were considering putting used strings back on. No disrespect intended...

Cheers - C

it's cool to take all the strings off at the same time. No string tension for a short time won't give you a problem.

I use a little Murphy's Oil Soap to clean my necks and it work very well.

Aftershave works well too (and smells nice)
