I don't care for it at all. If you want a truly 'hot rodded' '57 then get the Clapton signature. Looks better, sounds better and when the boost is activated will sound louder and heavier than any Les Paul.

Mmm the Clapton doesn't have the vintage finish and not the correct radius. I personally like the first Claptons that were real '57 vintage modified with the Lace and the booster, that had a switch.

I have a '57 commemorative, beautiful guitar, unfortunately, noisy pickups...soon she will receive a set of noiseless pickups, I was thinking about Lace Holy grails but also hot gold would be nice. Personally, I don't like side humbuckers like the Choppers, but it's my personal opinion.

Love my 57hotrod. It sounds way better than the vintage noiseless equipped clapton and the neck is absolute perfection. The pickup balance is incredible. When you get used to playing with the volume control the bridge pickup can deliver some very singlecoil like tones. The nasal quality of the tonezone really sits well in the bridge possition. Its like quack extreme and produces a very usable lead sound. lower the tone control to 8 and volume to 9, it gives a nearly p90 sound.

The fit and finish of the guitar are great too. Beware though the finish is made to age fast. My guitar is kept in a case and played about once a week. Its polished once a month and it already looks like the paint is sinking into the wood. Luckily the guitar is very vintage accurate with traditional routing. The join of the 2piece body shows under certain light as does one of the nail dowels under the pickguard. This link to orvilleowners thread will show you what i mean

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11703&highlight=nail+dowels

Atleast its not a 7 piece body and the usuall inch circle routing.

All in all its a great guitar. The only thing about it is, i wish i had two of em.

.....but before that he has to buy a house, a Harley Davidson for the lady, and a '57 Vintage RI...THEN....maybe only THEN.....that's if GAS doesn't get the better of him, and then thrown out into the night :!: :P

Like we tell everyone....go find one, and play one. That's what I told niki to do. See what kind of trouble I got him into

[quote="cuthbert"][quote="cwpainter"]rrect radius. I personally like the first Claptons that were real '57 vintage modified with the Lace and the booster, that had a switch.

Interesting: I have an '89, and there's another among us who is a real collector of 'em who has an '88. Neither have the mini-toggle which cuts in the boost to my knowledge. I've seen it on the 35th Anniversary guitar but I know that Eric didn't want it on his. I didn't think that ever made it to production.

From my point of view, that Clapton is less '57 it appears. I absolutely agree with you about the necks. The early necks ARE superior, better than my '97 which was also generation I, but the bodies lacks the soft contours and the deep offset waist relief of a '57. My Gilmour back to back has a deeper offset waist relief and a sweeter body finish, but playability remains superior, and both guitars are stormers, each in its own right.

Back to a serious response to your question because your's is not the first of it's kind nor will it be the last. You have to find yourself a vendor who stock the higher end gear so you can do an 'off the wall playdown' as part of your search, hopefully through the same type of amp you will be using at home.

You play that, a Clapton, preferably the Custom Shop Signature over the Artist, and '57 Reissue, because you're talking guitars with a v-neck feel, but with very, very, different vibes.

Then, if you have addtional questions, come back to your original post and update it. We'll all be alerted and we can have at it again.

Good luck :!:

I have this book:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FENDER-STRATOCASTER ... .m20.l1116

and in the middle pages there's a picture of a "early production Clapton model", in Torino red, with a vintage reissue '57 neck (yellow lacquer, 21 frets) AND the switch. this is my font, in the same page there is a early production Malmesteen with a scalloped neck that shows the same vintage lacquer....that's all I know.

Personally, I think that in early '88 they were producing the first two artists on the base of the '57...later they switched to a american standard neck with V neck, at least for the Clapton. Also the Malmsteen I tried didn't feel to have the 42 mm nut, it seems to me they were wider.

[quote="cuthbert"][quote="zzdoc"]: Interesting...I have the edition with the red cover. I'm going to look in there to see if the photos were updated.
