Hi everyone, this is my first post, and i just wanted to know the pros and cons of different types of strings. I just got a nice black mexican fat stratocaster with a rosewood fretboard.

My personal advice is to work yourself one size at a time to the biggest strings you can handle. And use D'Addario!

Different strings sound and feel different to each player. I suggest trying out several different brands and guages to find what is right for you and your guitar.

I like Fender 250 super bullets because I think they're more stable, but I also use Ernie Ball hybrid slinky a lot.

Get used to what you have on there now. Make mental notes like ...

"wish they were smoother to play on"
" the feel too thin, maybe thicker would be good"
"they're too tense, maybe a looser feel would be good"

... etc. Then you can find things you like.

I've used them all, my favorites were (are)

- GHS Boomers (more so when i was playing metal)
- Ernie Ball Slinkies (not bad, feel good)
- D'Daddario (still my favorites, sound great, last a long time)

I love Fender guitars and amps, but never totally loved their strings - though many people do.

Hello Exomat,

Firstly, welcome to this forum. :D

I'm playing superbullets cause I feel the
way the bullet end fits in the tremolo block
give both a tone and sustain advantage.
{no objective evidence of this}

Get over to your music store and experiment
with many strings it may take years I know
cause I been doing it for the last 40 and when
counter Katie says Mr Bill why don't you check
these new strings out I always give 'em a go.

Best of luck on your search.

Cheers.

Most strings are cheap--maybe consider buying a few different types & trying them out--but don't make any large leaps in gauges.

Sometimes you'll see different brand names on the packages--but in reality--they're the same strings.

I like GHS strings for electric, Adamas for my 12 string--although they're real hard to find, Augustine for my classical and whatever I can find for my shortscale bass.

ghs boomers .009-.046. They are smooth and silky, they last longer and can take some serious beating. But I'm also intrigued by those Elixir nanoweb strings. Last time I went out to buy strings, they only had them in .010-.046 gage. Didn't feel like doing a full guitar set up at the time.
Cheers!

I really like the Dean Markley Jimi Hendrix strings. They are designed for a Strat. I was on the phone with Dean Markley Strings and I was told they actually designed the strings for Strats. Also they are like the strings Jimi played. They keep their tone longer than D'addario XL, GHS Boomers, Ernie Ball Superslinkies and even Dean Marley Nickel Steel and Blue Steel. They have Hendrix tone too. All the strings I mentioned are very good. The Hendrix are superior though. There are two kinds. One has an Electric Ladyland package. These are all nickel. Then there is the Axis Bold As Love Packaging: these are nickel plated steel. I have been playing them back to back and I think I prefer the tone of the nickel plated steel. Try them both to see which you prefer. It all depends what tone you are looking for. I played all these strings a lot
so I compared them all. It was an awesome experience!

i personally use ernie ball extra slinky,BUT.......intonation and string height became a problem .008's didn't have enough tension so adjustments need to be made... spring tension, bridge height...
so i sent mine to the custom shop and had it set,it plays so frigging easey.
but it is still a matter of taste as far as strings go.I have six axes and all are not the same so...enjoy the music ..."play it loud and often"
