Is there a difference playing slide guitar on a solid body than on a lap steel. Is the tone different, can the lap steel reach higher frets, etc. I want to learn how to play slide after listening to Duane Allman, I also like David Gilmour's lap steel guitar playing. So is there a difference or could I go with either one?

Hi, Blaqdog: yes, you could go with either. Or for that matter you could use a resonator with a cone pickup, or a neck pickup, or both. Such an instrument can actually be had surprisingly affordably, and it is a fabulous bluesy sound. Here for example (this one has just a piezo, I believe):

Further, different solid body electrics will sound different with slide, depending on their pickups, amongst other things. Single coils surely give a different tone with bottleneck than humbuckers.

Duane frequently used an SG for slide, but Les Pauls too. And he was often photographed with Strats, but I couldn't say whether he played slide on them.

I have never played a lap steel, but I presume it must feel very different to a regular electric. Gilmour obviously sounds entirely different to Duane Allman, but how much of that comes from the instrument itself I couldn't tell you.

Hopefully, someone will post who can!

Cheers - C

Before i fitted compensated saddles to my tele i found that raising the action high really helped the intonation. The action was ridiculously high about 1/2" at the 12th fret. I also discovered the wonders of brass. Brass saddles, slide and pick. Also i found that nickel strings made a nice difference and have since fitted them to all my guitars. It all certainly produced a wonderfull tone, very well worth trying out.
