I don't use it, so I'm wondering what advantage/disadvantage there might be to screwing down the trem on my 62 Vintage Hot Rod. I presume that they're talking about the six screws along the leading edge, right?
Thanks

I have a 50/50 shot at being right here. I thought screwing down the trem referred to tightening the screws on the trem claw therefore pulling the back of the trem down flat to the body. You can still bend down not up. And you can also block it at that point making it a hard tail per se.

DONT SCREW DOWN THE 6 LEADING SCREWS.

it will raise the back of the trem up. tighten the screws on the spring claw in the trem cavity instead. Add extra springs too.

Very good advice.

Clapton always "blocked" his tremelo unit, and that is what I would advise to you if you never use it. There are many good guitar repair and mod books by Dan Erlewine that will provide you all the info you need. Check it out!!

Do you have to intonate again after bringing the trem down flush?

I would say yes. I imagine anything that moves the position of the saddles will affect the intonaton.

And you'll have to adjust the string heights too.

Nope, to screw it down you need to remove the rectangular plate on the back ad tighten the screws holding the trem claw so that the springs pull the bridge sown flush to the body.

having it contact wood might increase your sustain some.

You should probably reintonate if you decide to do it.

David Gilmour has said that he did this to every one of his guitars. Give the six screws about a quarter turn each and adjust the springs accordingly- it will really help with tuning problems.
