Wife gave me the ok to get another guitar, so I thought of actually building one from the ground up. I know that I want an Ash body with a 'Clapton' soft-V neck. My thoughts on pickups are HSS, as this would be 'another color paint in the palatte' so to speak. I am trying to get something that will give some raunchy punch for blues (ala Luther Allison or Gary Moore) and classic rock (Cream or Deep Purple). I like the way the Lace Sensor pickups look but I am unsure of the color combination that I would need. I am not deadset on the Sensors, its just a thought. Suggestions???

I'm currently enthralled by the idea of Dimarzio area 58 or 61's, Thanks to user 'Martian'. They look well worth checking out.

+1 for Dimarzio.
I've been using them for about 6 months and love 'em. Classic Strat tone, zero hum. I also have it wired with a push/pull for a neck/bridge pickup combo. Very Versatile.

I have an hss mexico stratocaster, and although i am a novvice, i think that it would be really neat to put a gibson humbucker in the bridge humbucker slot. Likewise, you could get a regular strat and put a carvin twin blade pickup in one of the single coil slots. The twin blade is a humbuckerlike pickup that fits sin a single coil slot.

I like Lace sensors, I would suggest a combination of blue, silver, and red.

The red is no hot that you don't really need a humbucker.

Any of those mentioned are all great, and just slightly different.

Your amp will make more of a tonal difference that the little differences pickups will get you though. I'd look at that big part of the tone chain first.

You could get a different amp, or change the way you EQ it or something, and make those same pickups you have now sound completely different.

So far I am looking at DiMarzio's in the following combination:

Vintage Heavy Blues 2 in the bridge, Vintage Heavy Blues in the middle and the Cruiser in the neck position. This combination seems to have very nice trebel all the way through but the bass and mids pick up as they flow towards the bridge. Anyone have any thoughts about this combo?

I am corresonding with the Lace techs to find a combo that works as well. Will post when I get closer to some selections.

I'm sure that is a good combo (as is many others). But it's not going to sound a whole lot different if you're playing the same way, through the same amp.
