Looking at the new MiM Standards, the Fender logos have truly struck me. I realized how odd it seemed to have both the serial no. and the "made in Mexico" decal on the headstock, and I was wondering, is there a way to remove the serial no. and "made in Mexico" decal without harming the finish on the headstock? Will it affect my tone if I do this? What's the worst that can happen?

(Its not like I'm ever gonna SELL the guitar...and I could just mark it down somewhere on the back of the headstock if I needed to, right?)

Rocker Gamma,

I consider you like my soul brother. Just like you, I have a badazz vintage Gibson, a MIM Std Strat, and a half stack. But - my soul brother - why do you want to remove the serial number and "made in..." sticker? Except for maybe 12 people, no one cares... And when you are channeling Robin Trower thru your fingers, then no one really cares about your serial number...

Men in black start knocking on your moms door and asking all sorts of embarrassing questions about you. Then they section you under the mental health act for worrying about such trivial things as whats on your headstock.

Seriously it happend to a bloke i met in a pub once. They put electrodes all over him and surrounded him with really expensive vintage guitars. Everytime he reached for one.... ZAP 10,000 volts.

Honest

Once you remove the serial #, any future sales have a shadow of doubt cast apon it. "Is it really a Fender, or did some lowlife scumbag just slide this decal on it to pass it off as a Fender" Not that YOU are a lowlife scumbag. I'm just saying that there are times in our lives when things change, and money is more important that that guitar( I know, I know). I have found that a genuine Fender(MIA, MIM, MIJ) is a known commodity, and worth something to somebody. I saw a MIM Strat in a pawn shop with Made In Mexico obviously scratched off the headstock, and it looked stupid, never to fool anyone.

He COULD do a quality job of sanding off the offending decal and refinish it. It is his guitar, but I wouldn't do it ...

I'd leave it on...just in case something happens. You may want to sell it 30-40 years from now when the thing is worth a crap-load od money.
