I gotta agree with all of the votes for the Highway One, either SSS or HSS version.

Don't let anybody tell you that you're stuck in Mexico. At $800 you clearly can get a Highway 1, just like the other people have been telling you.

The write states that his budget is $800 for a guitar and amplifier. Can we address that please :?:

Dude save up for the 08' American Standard bro, it's def worth waiting to earn the extra cash. But, if that 800 bucks is burnin' a hole in your pocket go with the Hwy 1.

For $800, get a 10% coupon for Guitar Center and pickup a Jimmie Vaughan Strat, Fender's best kept secret, for $450 ($500 less the 10%). All American electronics and parts, just assembled in Ensenada. Has a great variety in tone, very versatile, and feels absolutely incredible. That would leave you with about $300 for an amp (don't forget sales tax [the accountant in me can't]). I am not exactly sure what tube amp you can get for that price, but I am sure that there is one out there. The Blues Jr. sounds great with the JV, but it's a little more then the $300 you have left over.

Good luck and really try the JV, you won't be disappointed.

If you only have $800, buy the Fender Stratocaster HSS with the Floyd Rose Tremelo. Then buy a Roland Micro-cube. That will pretty much eat your money; however, it is a great start for a guitar/amp to get you started. :D

Hi, I am not a great player but own a 2008 American Standard. It is just an incredible instrument, feels wonderful, the weight, sustain and resonance are just fantastic. It sounds fantastic thru my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue and the Delta tone setting is great, raunchy. I just got a great deal on it thru Musickan's Friend, only 749 for a "scratch and dent" and there is not a scratch or dent on it, probably returned and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just one great guitar that I will have till the day I take the dirt nap. Happy playing, Lou.

I'd agree with getting a Highway One, I bought one about 5 months ago and love it. It's the HSS version and it sounds great.

Best one? It sort of comes down to which one feels and sounds best to you but in general I'd say:

Check the sales and see if you can get an American Standard.
If not, go for the Highway Ones, they're made in the US so you get the better hardware and electronics. The finish is Nitro so they don't cost as much.

As a last resort, go with the vintage players that are Made in Mexico. They look and sound nice, but the hardware and electronics aren't the same quality as the US models. Nor do they hold their value as well.

Considering ur budget ther, I'd say defo a Highway one Strat, or a Classic series 50', 60's or 70's, I like the retro styled Strats or even a Lonestar Strat, they are amazing, and my last vote would be a Lite Ash Strat, very gd guitars.

Whatever Fender Strat you choose it doesn't matter, it's still a Fender Strat.

Most definitely the highway one strat - in my experience there is no comparison between the american strats & other strats. mia all the way!
Also the solid wood body will give you a much better tone.

Here's some crazy questions:

1) How long have you been playing?

2) What kind of music do you play?

Starting with 2, I think different strat options may make or break whichever choice you make, at least in the pick up area. If you're going for Metallica and go with a classic strat or even just an American, you might have just been happier with a mexican fat strat.

Back to 1, the fact is only you can say which strat is best for you, we can only tell you what we like. SO, if you don't know much about them yet, why not just pick up a decent squire and keep saving up, and after a year or so you'll know what you'll like and dislike, and buy your next strat to meet YOUR newly developed tastes? Hey, you never know, you might end up with a gem of a Squire and change the pickups and be happy for life!

HAHA...by the way, dangerous way to ask the question....which is best...why not ask us who has the prettiest mother? You might get less biast opinions that way

(I kid, I kid)

Regardless of the one you buy first... its just the beginning... First you will be in love with the one you bought... You will play and play and play... then this sneaky little voice will whisper in your ear..."if you like this one so much... how much better would be another?"... Pretty soon your enthusiasm turns into obsession and obsession into addiction until you're caught up in a neverending appetite for new guitars... Run Run away as fast as you can... don't look back its not too late for you...
