I've got a Gold in the bridge position of my strat, and while I like the sound, I find that it's not as warm sounding as I'd like it to be. Sounds somewhat sterile played clean, although it sounds great overdriven. I'm going to put the hot Tex Mex back in the strat, and keep the Gold for another guitar.

Try a Blue Lace in there. It's voiced like a PAF, and was the neck pickup in the later Strat Pluses, Ultra, and Tele Plus.

I've had a silver and a gold in the bridge and loved neither. I wanted a classic strat sound, but quieter. I ended up putting a single-size JB Jr in there to get a single sound and a great humbucker sound when I need it too.

But, I LOVE a silver in the middle position, and a blue on the neck - which is how my main strat is set up, and I have no plans on swapping any of those three pickups anytime soon - they're exactly the combo I want.

The Lace Sensors could have the best tone in the world, but I would not buy them because I find them ugly on a Strat. Does anyone else think they look wrong without the poles?

I've had my Strat Ultra for seventeen years and anyone who sees the guitar is awed by the finish. the pickups are white with no poles. The pickguard is white (one day I'm going to change this to a white pearl). The finish is a 'crimsonburst' utilizing red and black in a variable pattern, which fades to black towards the edges. Occasionally I'll see it on this website in one of the promotional pictures which are seen on the borders of this chat area. I don't think they make it anymore; I saw it on a custom Telecaster, that is now discontinued. Click on the Artists tab and the top picture is this finish.

Other notable attributes include the locking Schallers in metallic finish, Schaller straplocks, an ebony fretboard (as in violin neck), a locking nut (the original locking nut, not the Wilkinson LSR), 2-bolt tremelo w/ a naked "whammy" bar (no white tip), and a coil-tap for the dually bridge PU.

The look of the pickup doesn't add or detract to the look as the white PU covers and white pickguard match. But I think they make black covers, too.

I'd love to buy a Ultra or a 35th anniversary, really astonishing guitars.

In '98 I saw a Ultra by my luthier and the quality of the wood and finish was above any Custon Shop that I see today.

My buddy had a Ultra that has a very dark (almost ebony looking) rosewood neck, all white pickguard and pickup covers and the dark read burst. One of the most beautiful looking, sounding and playing guitars I've ever had the pleasure of using in my life. Just incredible. I wish I would have snagged that from him when he sold it.

If it's a real Ultra the fingerboard MUST be ebony. With abalone inlays.

Within the years, many Pluses received the Ultra treatment...

Ah, that must be why it "seemed" like ebony back then. I didn't play close attention to any grain that was many years ago. Beautiful guitar though. I'd love to get a hold of one of those red burst ultra's again, wow.

I'll look into the Plus'es though too. Thanks for the tip.
