I agree entirely that tubes win hands down over solid state amps. But the OP has $200 to spend - and wants to play dates in coffee shops. An AC30 in a coffee shop?!! Mine's a skinny latte to go!

Amen to that! i was shopping for an amp upgrade not long ago. i dont really gig or play any shows or anything but i still wanted some of the....pureness, of a tube amp. I tried out the AC30 and i would be SHOCKED if anyone used this for smaller environment situations. I dont know much, but i learned tube watt and solid state watt or two totally different things. i doubt you would get an AC30 much beyond 3 on the volume knob! BUT, the thing did sound awesome - particularly with the Blue speaker upgrade

And not only that. Never A/B'd them, but I wouldn't be surprised if the AC30 is every bit as loud as my 100w Marshall combo. That Vox is a terrifying animal, even without Brian May's mods!

Incidentally, for those looking for a modestly priced quality small tube amp, our friends at Blackstar have just brought out a new five watter, as a combo or microstack. Google Blackstar HT5-C and HT5-H for a preview.

Haven't had my mitts on one yet, but I have already been reading reviews to die for - I have a strong notion this one is going to be the talk of the town very shortly.

PS: I think Niki's a little harsh on Marshall solid state amps, at least as far as the AVTs (Valvestates, as used to be) are concerned. But for sure, don't run one alongside the real thing: you won't be overwhelmed...

I like the AVT's I even rate the MG 100 to 250's. Its the small 15-25 watt cd line in MG's that i dont like. The speakers for em are horrible as is the build quality. I only found that on the lower wattage amps they improve greatly at even the 50watt even though the speaker manufacturer is the same. Its just better suited.

I own a valvestate 8040 that i must dig out. The clean channel on them amps is superb. I strongly suspect the clean channel on the AVT is the same and where the valve operates.

Ah well, yes, that's perfectly fair.

Strange thing, the minute I bought my Marshall TSL 100w combo when they were first out my search for my "dream" amp ended at that point. Job done.

It has been the hunt for a decent practice amp to pair it with that has kept me working ever since. I've tried the MG 15 and MG 100: both hopeless. (Though I still have them both: waiting for when I get round to buying a theramin, or something...) At the moment I'm using a 100w AVT and it's not too bad at all. Not the end of the rainbow by any means, but acceptable...

I'd try the blackheart mate. I've heard really good things about them. I'm happy with my vibrochamp and when i'm feeling extravagant the watkins.
My poor old marshalls just dont see electricity with no gigs.

Ah, I'm hot for a Blues Junior. Got the Marshall end of things tied up with the TSL: gotta get some proper Fender sounds to go with it, one way or another. No realistic use for another gigging level amp, so the Junior it will be, soon as I have the readies to hand...

Must say, can't wait to give that little Blackstar a try, though, having demo'd a couple of their grown-up amps. Very nice...

Cheers - C
