I just purchased a Fender American Standard Strat (sienna sunburst), and am looking for a reasonable priced amp.
I would like to order tonight if I could, as I have a gig Saturday.
I would like at least a 30w(?), I play coffee shop type environs & classic rock.
I would like a mp3/cd input as well.
I saw this:
Peavey Vypyr 30 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp, is it crap?

thanks

Look into the Roland Cube 30 watt amp. PLayed one the other day and it sounded great.

Congratulations on the new guitar. Awesome. Know how stoked you are.

The Peavey got great reviews from purchasers on the MF site.

I have a Roland Cube 30x. Great little amp for what it is. The Peavey has a bigger speaker.

But to me, the 30 watts from the cube, and it's tone, don't compare to the sounds I get from my 22 w '65 Deluxe Reverb, 15w Blues Jr NOS, or even 15w Pro Jr.

But if $200 is all you're looking to spend and you MUST have MP3/CD imput....Now that I think about it, (the Cube is my Son's), can you input to the Cube? I know it has an out jack for headphones that we can also out to the computer

The power ratings for tube amps seem to go a lot further than those for solid states.

Have you already considered and decided against a smaller tube combo, something like this?

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=481675X

Note it's a scratch and dent, which go fast. The un-dorked ones are $45 more, and the same basic amp but in 15w, vice this's 5w, is $450.

At the lower price points it seems to be getting harder to find amps without CD/mp3 inputs, doesn't it?

I vaguely remember reading a favorable review of the Peavey, so I expect you'd do fine with that.

But just to throw a couple more into the mix, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Fender Frontman amps yet.

Or if your tastes go a different way Marshall's AVT amps would get you on your way: the AVT20 or AVT50 would suit you depending on your channel requirements.

And there's plenty of others in your range with onboard f/x too, if you need that sort of thing. Personally, the idea effects in amps makes me shudder, so I leave it to others to take you down that path!

Good luck - C

Hi my friend.
We've got the same guitar, maybe we can have the same amp ,too.
Try the Super Champ XD. No line in but awesome sounds especially with an extra cab. Fine piece of equipment for the money. I have chosen 5 out of the 16 models that i like more and now i have enough sounds for my gig only with one amp. Add a wah wah and you're ready to go.
When you gig somewhere you don't need the line in and when you practice at home you can find for sure another source in the house to listen to your music along with playing. Just try the amp.
About the guitar, you'll see for yourself. GREAT INSTRUMENT.And the colour is FANTASTIC.
Greetings from Greece!

I run a stereo set-up for smaller gigs with a Fender Frontman 25R on one side and a Roland Cube 30 on the other. It makes for 55 total watts of power, makes my stereo effects shine, and is easy to carry. I do love tube amps, but they are heavy and expensive. I use my Marshall JCM and cab rarely nowadays due to its sheer size. Love the sound tho...

Except I suspect the gentleman wants to play small dates with a backing track through the same amp, hence the requirement for an aux-in. Sounds like that's the point of departure for our suggestions.

The Vox DA series have a CD/mp3 input: check out the specs regarding its amp sims and FX to see if that might suit.

Another way to go.

Cheers - C

Like all guitars, Fenders sound top notch on tube amps. Period. No getting around this. Nothing brings out it's nice Bell tones better than a solid, tube amp. I play on an Orange AD30 HTC through a Marshall 1960a Slant cab with Greenbacks. There is NO way that I would ever buy a solid state amp, ever. They are tone killers and totally distort it's sound. Since you say you play in small places, I would go for a nice combo amp. Orange makes a very nice version of my head as a combo. Also, you can't go wrong with a Vox AC30 or any of the Fender Devilles. I have only ever played 1 Peavey amp worth a damn, the classic 30. Really though, it's all up to you but like I said...I don't touch solid states with a 10 foot pole.

I agree entirely that tubes win hands down over solid state amps. But the OP has $200 to spend - and wants to play dates in coffee shops. An AC30 in a coffee shop?!! Mine's a skinny latte to go!

Don't be misled by that number 30 in the name. That Vox is a mind-rippingly loud amplifier. Not the tool for this job!

There's two or three nice tube amps available at knockdown prices - but still distinctly more than the gentleman's budget. And off-hand I can't think of a tube amp with an aux-in - though that doesn't mean there isn't one...

By the sound of the first post Mr Deppeler may already have his new amp by now. I wonder what he bought/will buy?

Cheers - C

Is their anything in the GDEC range within your price range.
I bought a fender vibrochamp xd that has a superb sound, good array of effects, alas no cd line in.
Peavey dont have a longstanding reputation for quality for nothing. I'd argue that their products in the lower wattages and begginer/jam amps do more for that reputation then their high end stuff. I think its where they excell.

Truth be told, for the type of amp your after manufacturers have been waging war against each other since 1990 odd. Theres not a great deal of difference in quality between the big 3 fender, peavey and vox. Just stay away from marshall in this range, their terrible.

I agree with Niki, but If you could double your price range I'd start out with a Blues JR. and the NOS model if possible! They are a loud little amp and if need be you can run through a pa system !
