i have a standard MIM sunburst strat. i've been browsing on the forums, and i have seen more and more people complaining about the finish on the necks of the Mexican strats. i wanted a MIM because of the price of the american ones, and i didn't really like the sound of the MIA's (curse me). is there a way i can make the neck smoother or play better on mine? maybe with a coat/sand/coat/sand of polyurethane or a sealant? if not, and this is as good as it's gonna get, would it be an upgrade if i sold mine to buy a MIM classic player 60's? would the necks feel any better? are they thicker? would it feel like an early american neck?

i know it's a lot of questions, but i find myself going to my mid-90's squier bullet strat before i pick up the MIM, because of the f*ing neck.

any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

What is it exactly that YOU don't like about your current neck? I love my MIA, but the MIM I have has a great neck that I would change either. I like the modern C necks, light or satin neck finish, 9.5 radius. And both of these have that, which is one of the reasons I got them.

Do you want a fatter neck? Shinier (which can mean more friction sometimes), or less glossy? Rounder fretboard or flatter?

There is no "better" neck for everyone, so you need to know what you want, and what feels good to you.

Like asking someone what size shoes you should buy.

The finish on the MIM Strats is a little shiny, therefore a little less smooth than the satin finish. I have heard many ways of dealing with this problem
1. lightly sand the neck with fine sandpaper
2. lightly rub OOOO steel wool on the neck
3. use a finish stripper, and refinish with satin finish poly or lacquer
4. remove the finish entirely and refinish with tung oil
5. remove finish entirely and leave the wood bare
6. leave it alone and play it as is(my recommendation)
research it before you do something you may regret later

I'd go with the 0000 steel wool, using it just enough to take the high gloss off - and then stop! Take care on the edges of the fingerboard: you will go through the finish there before anywhere else.

Gently does it.

Cheers - C

I agree with Ceri.

Hitting the back of the neck with some 0000 Steel wool, just enough to take off the high gloss finish.

Apart from the modifications recommended above, the usual and customary suggestion to some of what you put is that you have to shop around and play these guitars to get the feel of what's right for you.
