Hi all
I've read through the website and would like to ask the pundits of the forum whether there are more differences between an American Standard 2008 and an American deluxe 2008 beyond the obvious differences:
-Pickups, SCN's on deluxes vs std
-S-1 switch on Deluxe.
-locking tuners on deluxe
-Bridge (dunno which is better)
-Abalone markers
-Delta tone tone control on the std.
-2piece deluxe body vs 3 piece standard.
- Biflex truss rod on the std (dunno what the deluxe has)
Are the woods of a different grade?, the finish any "better" ? or are they just basically the same models with the above differences.

Does the "Highly Detailed Fret and Nut Work" quoted from the deluxe specs on this website really mean anything?

I have a Deluxe, and I like it way better than the Standard. It does all that a Standard will do plus more, looks better, I prefer the soft V neck, Plays better (for me), and doesn't have the 60 cycle hum problem around transformers and fluorescent lights.

Here is "Honey"

Image

She has a vintage look to her that I love.

The solid bridge tends to give more sustain.

The wood is top quality alder. It is selected from the best.

The finish is superb.

All in all, it is perhaps the best production American model strat ever produced, and I have been playing strats since they were invented.

I got a top quality ATA case for mine. It gives my "Honey" the best protection and bed avilable.

Thanks Wally Dow for the reply
Mine is a 2008 Ash deluxe with the modern C shape with the 2-Point Synchronized Tremolo. I'm beginning to get used to its pickups, they aren't exactly "straty" or traditional poppy sounding and a little dark, which counterintuitively suits my playing style fine.. but it wasn't what is expected from a strat.

I can see the advantages of the noiseless pickups, especially that i live in an apartment building and the 60 cycle hum can be a problem with interference coming from all around you.

I have a feeling that they are slightly better build than standards .. but not much ... what's your take on that
cheers

I like the Standard more because it got more upgrades for the 2008 model and the deluxe didn't get any. I don't like the SCN pickups and the abalone fret inlays.

Fender American made guitars must all meet the standards that the compny has set for quality.

American made Fender quality, for any of their guitars, therefore, will be about equal.

Picking out the one for you is a lot like falling in love. You will know the guitar that is "made for you" when you play it.

I don't know how else to put it.

:)

I like the feel of the Deluxe better. But, my Mexican Strat is a 2000 and bsed on playing those in stores, the newer ones feel completely different. I like the locking tuners, and I like the chorone Fender logo on teh head stock.

I know ... and I appreciate your opinion ... I'm just trying to get a feeling of or a comparison between models and how people see them ... I've been playing guitar for 33 years now .. but have not touched an electric since probably 1987.... so I value all opinions ...
Thanks and cheers

The neck on my Deluxe is the biggest standout to me, all though the entire guitar is phenominal. Made a post on this thread a couple hours ago regarding it in response to someone's question, if you're interested.

I would like to find another Strat in addition. Something with a 9 1/2" radius and the old pups. Probably have to look for a pre loved Robin Trower from the Custom Shop.

Thanks Dafreeze for you comment.

I agree with you ... my favorite signature model is the Robin Trower model. Did you change the pickups on your deluxe? thats my major grievance... they sound mellow and nice .. but just lack the stratty twangy poppy sound I'm used to.
My deluxe BTW is 9.5" radius neck ... I would like to buy another 7.25" radius like the Trower model.
cheers

SCN's shouldnt be that different in sound to regular stock pickups, atleast nothing a amps eq cant sort out. I have em on my 57hotrod. OK i notice a marked difference to the vintage noiseless on my partsocaster but next to no difference between them and the bands 2nd guitarists standard strat which we use as a backup.

Granted they do require some work. I found that the volume control on the guitar adds certain flavours to em with the traditional strat sound being somewhere around the 8 mark. Also maybe switching the tone pots to 1meg's could help bring out the high frequencies you want.

Bill lawrence has a mod that turns one of the pots into something akin to a presence control, that maybe worth looking at too. The Q filter

http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickup_Window/Q-Filter.htm

not the most informative page i know. I discovered various youtube vids testing it though.

You're welcome, but I brain farted when I typed 9.5" radius. That's what the neck on the Deluxe, and most Strats, is cut at. I'm interested in a 7.25" radius cut. One of the reasons the Robin Trower model got my attention.

Haven't touched the SCN's. I like them, but don't have any personal experience with any others. I do find myself frequently rolling back the tone pot a couple/few notches when playing solely through the bridge pup.

Thanks a million...these are really very good points ! I hope i'm not too heavy asking you three questions
1-How much different are SCN's compared to Vintage noisless (EC model) and\ or cermaic noiseless (JB model)in your opinion.
2-What kind of "work" do you suggest besides volume control to 8, changing tone pots ? would changing the height of the pups make a difference. I would expect them to sound much louder and mellower if they were higher and more stratty and maybe thinner if lower (don't want to play with them until i decide to keep it or go to a signature model).
3-What does the filter do, unfortunately I couldn't see anything on Youtube. Will keep on trying.
Cheers

What niki said about the SCN's are pretty true IMO....with the S-1 switch i find them to be interesting but needs filtering when switch all the way up.
Another way i suggest is to "balance" the output of the pickups....i got the luthier to do that for me and he did a good job in balancing the outputs as i have 2 SCN's(one in the neck & middle) and a Tone Zone Strat in the bridge....

Rumor has it that the American "Deluxe" is as "Wazoo" as you can get without losing your mind and buying from the Custom Shop.
They are definately the prettiest Strats. I don't know if they perform any better than the American Standards though.
