Wow,

After 20 years playing I have finally discovered why people play strats...... and now I want one.

However I'm a bit lost with all the models and before you say "try them out" i live in a small town where I pretty much have to order in which ever one I want since they are too small to have a lot of guitars in stock.

I'm looking for some nice glassy tones and low gain tones like John Mayers, Clapton, and Pearl Jam on the song Yellow Ledbetter. So after looking at all the models/options I think I've narrowed it down to a few models that fit my budget but wanted to ask people that own them if these models can achieve this sound... Oh yeah, my budget is $700 max. So, in order of preference....

#1) highway 1
#2) lite ash special edition
#3) standard strat (MIM)

Thanks for any replies!

Greetings and welcome!

Based on your choices, the overwhelming general consensus that I've seen/heard is the Highway 1.

Based on only those, I would go with them in exactly the order you have. I have a MIM Standard that is awesome. I love it. HOWEVER ... if you have some more bucks to throw at this, consider an MIA Standard or (for just a tiny, tiny bit more) a Corgan sig. I say this because the MIA Std or Corgan come with a kingly case, and you really need to get a HSC for your 1-3 above anyway (just my opinion, though). So by the time you buy the Hwy 1 and a case, how far away are you really from an MIA Std? And if you are going to get an MIA Std, why not go just a little further for a Limited Edition first-year Corgan?? Suh-weeeeet.

Just my $0.02...

IMO the american strats play better so I would go with the highway one. I haven't played one but I seen a guy play one live it was pure strat magic. Welcome to the strat addiction!

Lol 01GT,

I have thought of the same thing about going to the MIA standard but I really only want to spend 7-800. Here the MIA standard are about 11-1200 and since I already have a couple hardcases I would save the cash for now. The plan is to get a decent workhorse strat for now and then maybe get a really high end one once the economics are a bit more stable.

Oh, and just to tease me, the local dealer has a brand new VG he is tempting me with for 1499. Grrrrr!!!! >< Tempting but for now $800 is my absolute top amount. $600 would be best!

Yes, I have. Now, mine is a 2002 pre-upgrade model...

I also have a 2002 pre-upgrade Highway One. Get very glassy tones, especially in the neck!

However, the pickups are Kinman Woodstocks so I can't be of much use...

Play all three. Play several of each. See which one speaks to you, you'll know. Personally I own a '07 HWY 1 SSS and I can play anything from 70's rock, blues, to heavy metal.

You may have another option available to you.

I live in the sticks as well, nearest GC is a hunerd miles away. In the last 11 months I've bought 6 guitars, 4 amps and a buttload of pedals and periphrials. All through either Musicians Friend, a friend/aquaintance or off e bay. Been very fortunate.

Specifically in regards to a Strat, I bought an '07 American Deluxe for $850 off ebay. Minimum bid, max I stuck in was $900. No other bidders. The guy I bought it from got in touch with me right away, offering to let me back out. I think he was very disappointed no one else bid on it and it went for what it did. He'd sold it new several months before, but the owner had returned it after 2-3 days. Still had the plastic crap stuck all over it and it was completely mark/dent/scratch/smudge free. Pristine as they get.

Have been a Les Paul guy all my life and this is my first Fender. I love it. I think everyone should have one. Not quite the bad@$$ as my Les Paul, but can come pretty close. I love lots of clean volume through the neck pup. It's an increadibly fine instrument in every aspect. It is the finest feeling and playing guitar I own. Can't say enough positive things about it. And the neck...Dear Lord made it in Heaven. I don't particularilly care for the extra tones achieveable with the S-1 engaged, but I love these pickups, the other upgrades and the neck. (It is different from that installed on the American Standard.)

Olympic White Pearl. Didn't care for the tortous shell, and without realizing it until pointed out later, created a tribute to David Gilmour's #0001.

All the junk below is simply to lend a bit of Creedence to what I wrote above.
