Hi Guys

Bizzare brainrattler of the week from Bonesy! :lol:

I was wondering what the visual differences are in the blocks of trem units namely between a Squier strat trem block, and a Mexican fender block?

I've just bought a thoroughly mint condition old Squier vintage trem unit from ebay (Cheap as chips and I'm talking looks like it was broke up for bits & put in a drawer kind of mint) it's a very early model, without numbers I'm guessing early 80's.

When I bought it the bloke was kind enough to say "I'll stick a fender Mexican block on it for you, the other was a bit weedy."

Sorry man but I wouldn't know one from the other if you belted me over the head with either of them. :lol: It was a kind gesture and I wasn't worried either way, the trem is lovely, but I was curious if there is much visual difference between Squier and Mexican fender made blocks?

I had a gander in the back of my Squier bullet and that block looks darker in colour and has what I can only describe as a straight cast along the bottom, and this one on the Vintage Squier (claimed fender block) unit has a cast dimple after the string holes, below where the arm screws in.

Pics below;

And the bottom of the "new" unit;

See what I mean about that casting indent? Sorry about the lopsided trem in my bullet it's always been like that :oops:

Regards,
S.

The block in your bullet is thicker and the metal is of a better quality. The block in your hand looks like a generic cheapie block found on all manner of budget guitars, except your bullet apparently :D .

[quote="Bonesy"]Hi Guys

Which, by the way, is the reason why the new '08 MIA Standard has that copper infused trem block. More mass in less space.

If you can get your hands on a '50's or '60's guitar you'll see how much metal is in that vintage block.

Quite the difference.

Prior to 06, MIM Standards had a smaller trem block than 06+. Even though "smaller", it still looks bigger than what you are showing in the pics. If you can install such a block on to your bridge, you would be better off (assuming it hooks up, though). But if the older MIM block fits, then you could also put in an 06+ MIM Std block which is MUCH bigger than the 05 and earlier. That would be -- by far -- your best bet if possible.
