Could someone tell me what the difference is between the guitar without the HSS and the one with?
They are both $1099, is the one with HSS better?

thanks

The difference is the pickup. The traditional strat has three single coil pickups sss while the other has two single coil pickups and humbucker pickup at the bridge hss. The humbucker tends to have a fatter warmer tone with more bottom end. The single coil has a thinner and and brighter tone and it has more "bite" than the humbucker. Either one is good depending on what you want to play. If you're into hard rock, jazz, blues, alternative etc. than get a hss. If you're into classic rock, country, blues, alternative, etc. than get sss. The difference is really in the tone and I would suggest that you try both out before purchasing.

Thanks for the explanation.
I would play mostly classic rock, Dire Straits, Led Zeplin or Pink Floyd and maybe some Jackson Browne.
Should I then go for the HSS?
I have to buy online (I am thinking Musician's Friend) as I am nowhere near a music store (150 miles).
Unless you know of somewhere elese that has better prices/service?

thanks again

I've heard good reviews about musiciansfriend so you should be alright. Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits uses both a strat and a gibson. His strat has three single coils. David Gilmour from Pink Floyd uses a strat and it has three single coils also. Jimmy page from zeppelin uses a gibson. To answer your question of whether to get hss or sss, it really all depends. If I were to choose I would get the one with three single coils. The whole point in getting a strat is to get that twang sound, and usually you get it from an sss strat. However the hss has more bottom end, meaning the sound will be fuller when you use the humbucker. The humbucker also dosen't produce any noise like the single coils do. The humming sound that single coils make might get on your nerves. Some people also say that the hss is more versatile than an sss as wel. The choice is up to you. I would suggest looking up reviews for these products and then read what others have to say about them.

well i would get the hss. you could possibly get a coil tap for the humbucker. when you said the only reason you want a strat is for the twang. you are wrong. i love it for the feel of it, the body contours and the neck. i love the sound of it too! lol!

thanks for all your help.
I went for the sss, just because I want to get the authentic sound a a strat which I think this will do.
I'm sure I will be happy with my choice:
Sienna Sunburst with Rosewood fretboard.
