Pretty much the same as me.

I was used to Strats from the days when there was only one type of Strat. A Strat was a Strat. So .... I was happy when my new HWY 1 HSS felt like ... a Strat to me.

yes, 21 frets or 22 frets are both on 25.5 scale length
it does not affect the tone
but 21 frets offer larger fret room space
it is up to personal playing style
whether one need 21 frets,22 frets or both
but 21 frets Strat are more suitable for Hendrix playing style

I'd read that there were do difference in the spacing between the two, the just added the extra fret at the bottom, because of the design, there was the room to do so. I could be mistaken though

not sure about the more recent American Strat
but I once tried my friend's American Standard from the 90's
the fret space is smaller
when he tried my MIM Strat
he also noticed my guitar's fret space is larger

I own a HIGHWAY ONE and it is way more versital. The neck and/or middle pickup will give you an awesome STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, HENDRIX, OR CLAPTON sound and the bridge humbucker will give you an AC/DC, or anything else sound.
As far as the HIGHWAY ONE being made in AMERICA with AMERICAN parts, there is a law that anything bearing the stamp MADE IN THE U.S.A. has to be at least 90% made in AMERICA. I really don't think that FENDER, a quality company, would break the law.

How is that with the Hwy1's hot single coils and greasebucket? It is a nice sounding guitar but it is not a Classic Strat sound.

There is another plus about the FENDER HIGHWAY ONE STRAT, I have always wanted to get that CLAPTON " crying guitar " sound and have been close with my other STRATOCASTERs, however I can get that sound with this STRAT. I don't know if it is the pickups, the GREASEBUCKET wiring, the reverse wiring on the center pickup or the unique finish letting the wood " talk " more. I'm no ERIC CLAPTON, however this guitar helps me sound like him on " crying guitar " songs like WONDERFUL TONIGHT. It's freaking cool. :D

I would say its your playing because he does not use the same pickups or a greasebucket circut. It may also be if you are using a 57 Tweed Twin like him or if you are getting that whining sound through a Leslie Cab driven by a JCM800 like the one that Eric uses.

the highway one is american made and you are also so
right when you said its way more versatal than the american standard strat.
the highway one strat is one of the very few guitars period were you
dont have to change guitars to get a certain tone i also find the sustain
to be much better also than the american std. the alnico3 PU are some of
the best PU i have herd in a very long time

I'm kind of in the same situation! I'm considering going for the American Standard but I'm in the U.K. - so our currency's taking a beating and the Highway One seems like a good option. But I have listened to a few demo's of it, and although I haven't played one, I have played a fair few Standards, both Mexican and American. The only advice I can offer is that you get a fantastic Hendrix Vibe from the Standards...

I know that CLAPTON doesn't use the same pickups or the GREASEBUCKET wiring, what I am saying is that I think the HIGHWAY ONE set up makes this "crying sound " easier to achieve than a STANDARD STRAT.

versatile like the highway one.

With all respect, the standard Strat configuration, whether it be USA or MIM, isn't meant to be versatile in terms of sounding like any other guitar. Surely you buy a Strat because you want it to sound like a Strat not an SG, Les Paul or whatever.
If you want a classic Strat go Standard - or even better, Vintage Re-issue.
If, however, you are looking for a guitar that does it all then the H'way One sounds a good bet.

The reason the frets seemed closer together on the 22 fret USA was to do with the size of the frets I imagine. I believe they were jumbo at least at this stage (1990s) but I could be wrong. The 22nd fret is just an addition to the neck which doesn't affect the length of the scale.

Exactly. You get a lot of different Strat sounds, not every guitar sound known to man. If you want that, get a Parker Fly or something.

Things that do many, rarely do anything great. I'd rather have one or two guitars that do their own thing great, than one guitar that does too many things but just does them "good....".

If I want a Les Paul sound, I'll play a Les Paul.
