Hi all,
I own an early 2000 American Delux Ash Strat. Blond, maple fretboard. GREAT GUITAR. However, while the noiseless pu's are toneful and wisper quiet, they are not very powerful.
I'm considering getting either a Highway One or a Standard Strat. I'm looking for more of an early 70's, Hendrix sound with no effects.
Any thougths?
Thanks,
Ralph

If you want the hendrix sound with no effects I would think the highway one isnt the one for you... they were designed to actually be able to play a little more modern rock .. their pickups sound a little different to what most people would call the classic "strat" sound.. but they are amazing axes ..... :D

Definitely Highway One. I own both a 2000 MIM and a 2006 Highway One and the Highway One is far superior for Hendrix vibes.

Hello DrRbiansco,

You really gotta get out there and play'em
both and see what one floats your boat.

What's that, your in the middle of nowhere and
stratocasters aren't available for test driving,
and your gonna buy through the mail.

Either choice will do the job for you.

You pay more for the Standard but you get
a hardshell case and it's bullitproof poly finish.

Many prefer the nitro finish of the highway and
believe it will become more collectable in the future.

Roll the dice and play the heck out of it when
you get it home.

Cheers.

I've heard alot of good things and some bad things about the highway 1's. Take it for what it's but some Guitar Center "expert" told me that Highway 1's are made with Mexican parts. For some, it might not mean alot, but I don't touch any guitar unless it's American. This is why the H1's are cheaper?

As stated above, the H1 has more of a modern tone. If you want more of a vintage tone, I would say Standard but like everyone says, it's all about how you feel when playing it. I've seen people swear by MIM's but I won't touch them. Hendrix's tone was really more about his style rather than his gear. If you watch some of his live stuff (Isle of Wight) when he plays the Gibson, he still has that classic Hendrix feel to it.

Do as everyone has said. Take a drive to a shop that carries both and see how you like them. If that isn't an option, you are just going to have to choose blindly or listen to some reviews on Youtube. I try not to base opinions from youtube videos because those don't do it justice. You have to be up close and personal to get the full tone. Good hunting!

Are we talking about the MIA Standard or the MIM Standard. :?
Because the MIM is less than the Highway 1 and does not include a case.
:D

Well i've got a highway 1 and i've never heard anyting about it is build with mexican parts. Truth is that highways now come with stickers of the american flag, so i think it's doubtful that part of mexican materials...
Now the price. Once more, highway 1 is not cheaper because supposed mexican parts...highway 1 is cheaper because of the finish (not so expensive as the am standart) and because of the bridge: while highway's is a vintage style synchronized tremolo am standart's is a 2-Point synchronized tremolo with new american standard bent steel saddles.
Furthermore am standart, like the name says, is the standart of Fender, and so the price must be expensive due to reputation of the brand.

Cheers

I'm not sure where they're made exactly, but the sticker doesn't mean anything.

Many Ford and other "american" cars are made over in Mexico, Canada and now Russia, yet many people will proudly call them "american cars", and they help no families over here except 6-figure execs and up. You can also go buy a "ricer burner" Honda that's made right in Ohio by everyday families, yet it's not considered "american" and idiots will tell you to go buy an "american" car (even if it's built by foreigners in mexico).

The lines between what is american and what isn't are heavily blurred, with cars, economics, and even with guitars.

I would try out the American Standard if you want a guitar that has a more 70's sound. And as for HWY1 being made from the same parts as the MIM Standard just think about it the Hwy1 has Alnico3 pickups the MIM has ceramic. The Hwy1 has a greasebucket the MIM does not. They are just different in many ways.

The main price grabbers (as I see it) to drive up price for the MIA Std compared to the H1:
1) Case
2) Bridge
3) Finish
4) Pickups (likely the standard's cost more to Fender)

yeah but cars are different. theres gonna be no difference between a mexican ford and an american ford because they would have the same metals and engines and procedures.

the highway1 is a no thrills guitar. anything that isnt absolutly essential to a good sounding guitar that puts price up isnt on it. they are american made. mine was made in the us factory.

i dont think they would lie. or get mexican parts shipped up to build a fake american made guitar. fender is surely above that

Oh sure. I don't think they're any deception at all. I'm just saying that you can have what can legally be called an "american" product that isn't really fully american.

Even on a MIA Standard, I can bet not every single part and component is 100% american made. Some of the metal stamped parts, the electronics, other little things, etc.
