Hey y'all,
Umm, I have problems with my cord driving me insane[with all the static sound and stuff like that]. I really want a good cord but what is the best brand that isn't horribly expense and actually lasts a while.
Thanks for all the help!

Instrument cables are notoriously expensive. I got two cords not too long ago for about $30, quite a bit of money for not-so-high quality cords. Of course they're not low quality either. :?

But if you're having trouble with that, just buying one good ("armored") cord will last you a really long time. Even if they are $25, you probably won't regret it later. :D :?

I use George L's cables. Very nice and quiet but they can be expensive. Look them up.

Many people are not aware, but a shielded cable with hi quality Switchcraft ends are the best that can be used. I would look for a cable that has a very tightly braided shield and a medium gauge multi core. The best option is, of course, copper center and shield.

When shopping for the ends, try to stay away from the new Switchcraft right angled plug. Try to find one of the older type flat right angled ones, and if you can try to use the real good old fashioned Switchcraft straight 1/4 inch with strain relief.

Another trick is to use the SRT type straight or right angled flat ends. This gives you the option of a back up ground in case of the braid solder joint opening from wear.

You can make the cords yourself and that gives you the option of choosing your own lengths as needed.

Soldering is a lot easier than most realize and I suggest using a medium to hot tip soldering iron when doing the job. Also, it helps to use solder flux when soldering, as this helps to clean the contacts and brighten the solder during the job.

Always use a "resin" core solder and flux when soldering electronics.

You can also make your own microphone cables like this too. If you keep a spool of high quality braided cable with two leads and the braid, you can use the same cable for your instruments and microphones. Try to find a cable that is cased in rubber, not plastic, as rubber is much more durable.

When shopping for the cable, make sure the outside diameter of the cable can fit easily but securely through the openings on the jacket of the 1/4 inch jacks.

Try to stay away from brass ends as they can corrode or oxidize and cause weird problems with your tone.

An electronic supply house (Not Radio Shack) will most likely have the parts you are looking for. If there is not a supply company near you, do a search on line for high quality Switchcraft ends and cable.

Monster Cables are pretty robust.

All my cords are Monster Cables. The ones I'm using now, are about 5 years old, and they are holding up, and still look new, with no problems. I have some Livewire cords, but I like the Monster Cords much better.

I just got an Evidence Audio with my DG . We will see how long it last but it's completely quiet and they are not cheap. See what happens! 8)

Haha! When I saw the thread title I was ready to post Am9 omitting the root, which I happen to be enjoying right at this moment...

However, my own answer to the actual question is George Ls - for the moment, anyway.

Cheers - C

If you are a loud player you know stepping on a cord can generate a signal. Wearing moccasins onstage helps, and so does this technique. Take a cord with the lead and ground wrapped in mesh. Solder the mesh and ground together on one end, just using the wires on the other end. This lets the mesh act as an extra shield.

Live Wire 's what I use, both for instrments and their 14 ga. speaker cables. A lot of people will use a guitar cable for their amp head to cabinet connection, but if that cable fails. bye-bye output tranny!! 8) Mike
