I have a strat with serial# 025351,and on the other side of the plate is # -26348.The neck is a deep v 57 style ,and there is an 11 hole "greenguard" but there is no router nub.Maybe the first run of the 11 hole pickguard? The neck is undoubtably a 57,and original to the guitar. The guitar itself is a texas legend, and I know it's history from the 60's.Any info would be helpful in trying to date it.thanks.

I've found that pretty helpful. Knowing all the origins of my 61 Gibson Melody Maker, I keyed in the serial # and I was surprised how accurate it was. :D

A.R. Duchossoir's book, "Guitar Identification" has the following on page 5: "Between late 1957 and late 1958 some plates were double-stamped and feature two different numbers on each side. As a rule, teh visible number is of the six digit-type beginning with 0 (e.g., 024154), while the hidden number stamped on the underside is of the minus type (e.g., -24785).

That pickguard doesn't sound like it's original to the guitar, IMO.

The transition period, as far as pickguards go, was in 1959 (with the conversion to rosewood fingerboards).

Those old single ply pickguards cracked and broke pretty often and were replaced.

I know the serial # dates it to 58-but the pickguard is original,as is the deep v neck.Is it possible that it is an early run or prototype, and Fender decided to wait to re-tool for the router nib until they ran out of old pickguards?Maybe there was the '57 neck lying around?I've seen a lot of '57's-this sure looks like the real thing.

Sounds like the story of Stevie Ray's Number 1! They say that when he bought it the guitar was a sort of prototype or side project put together from left over parts in the Fender factory- a '58 body and early 60's neck. The neck was initialed ''LF'' hmm..
