Hi all

I bought an American Fender Deluxe Ash Strat from GC recently. I wasn't too happy with the action but didn't want to fool around with it until I settle on keeping this guitar. The tone is OK but i feel its not as straty as other non-SCN pickups. I'm not saying they're bad in anyway though.

The salesmen, both great guys, are trying to convince me to take up an Eric Johnson or a Jeff Beck signature model instead and many on different boards seem to agree, all arguing that the latter two are tone-monsters in comparison.

I wont be able to play the artist models unless I commit - even if generally - to the switch. any opinions on that? issues that woul dbe helpful? I would have loved to AB them together, but in absence of that luxury I rely on your comments
Thank you

Hello Hisham Seif-Eldin,

Of the 3 choices your giving,

I like the Johnson first, my idea of great tone.
I like the feeling of the neck on it also,
but it could have a nicer pickguard.

Beck second and deluxe last as I
am not a big fan of the SCN's.

I have a older deluxe that has vintage noiseless
and I like those{alot}.

Best of luck on your choice

I agree with Mr. Bill, I have a Tele Deluxe with the Noiseless Vintage Tele pick up s and it is awsome. Although I do like the SCN's and S-1 switching in teh newer Deluxe, the Vintage Noiseless ones are hard to beat.

I own both kinds. I have a 07 Deluxe Ash Strat and a New 08 David Gilmour Nos and I love the Deluxe but I can't compare it to the CS DG!
I know I've been no help to you, but depending on your budget I'd go for a CS. The Deluxe is only one step down and is a Great guitar! 8)

I forgot my manners, Welcome to the forum!! :) One more thing, I had to have the Deluxe setup by a pro tech right off the bat, until you do that you can't really judge it!

Thanks to you all

your posts are of great help.

Thanks fhopkins for the welcome. in the less than 2000 $ price range what other options do I have that you would recommend.

I will use the guitar basically for home play and home recording, and maybe gig with it every once in a while. I'm into jazz-blues-rock fusion with some ethnic influences (70's music mainly, I'm in my mid forties).

I would have preferred a CS but maybe i have to wait a while before I can afford one (family obligations).

Mr.Bill ...thanks for your list it really helps, but what would you advise if i had the option to go to any Fender strat in the same price range 1700$(not just the EJ, JB and Deluxe), would your list change ?

Biloxi ...I guess the Eric Clapton has the vintage noiseless, I played it at GC, fortunately they had one, it plays nice it has more of a straty sound compared to the SCN's.

Any additional ideas are very much welcomed.

If you don't like the sound of the SCN then I would go with the EC! The SCN's take a little dialing in and depending on the amp. effects (if any) you use. Good luck finding the one that sounds right to you! :) 8)

Hello Hisam Seif-Eldin,

My first choice in your price range would be the
'62 Hotrod, I own one and it is a tone monster.
It does have a pretty beefy neck that I feel is excellent
but some are turned off by it's size.
Slab rosewood board w/medium jumbo frets.
To do trussrod ajustments you gotta remove the
neck,as the adjuster is in the base of the neck
but thats the way it was back then not big deal
for me----but some do not like this.

My second choice is the Eric Johnson with it's
soft v neck and maple fretboard on a quarter sawn neck
harboring medium jumbo frets. No cover on the
tremolo springs but thats ok{mine is off also}
Like I said earlier the pickguard is single ply white
and leaves me wanting more, but Johnson likes it.
I generally favor a rosewood board but this Johnson
guitar is so nice playing and sounding

Both guitars have a nitro-cellulose finish so care
should be exercised.

My third choice American Standard you'll save $700
and have a great axe.

Play many choose one{or more}

Cheers.

If i decide go down the Custom shop route what would you recommend ? Please keep in mind that this will be my main electric guitar (I have a Schechter with jazz/JB humbuckers that will go to Junior who is still learning).... My one month grace period at GC ends in a few days.

If i decide go down the Custom shop route what would you recommend ? if not, I noted your recommendation to go with the EC signature and Mr.Bill's to go with a hot rod 62, an EJ signature or a Standard.

Its been twenty some years since I've played electric...seems like a lifetime

Ok ..
Just for the record.. I kept the American Deluxe Ash and ordered a loaded pickguard with CS69's (hasn't arrived yet). I think you can definitely improve the response of SCN pickups by locating that sweet spot on pickup height.
The quest continues..
Cheers
Hisham

Hello Hisham Seif-Eldin,

That was a pretty smart way to go.
Now with the extra money you can
take the loved ones out for a good time.

Cheers.
