I got an email today from my unhappy son up at UMass Lowell, where he's majoring in Audio Engineering. I'll just copy it straight here. Perhaps some fo the wise gurus here can shed some light on the problems and possible actions to fix them. I had bought the 57 for him as a combo Chanukah, 18th birthday, and HS graduation, and I would hate for him to sell it....here is his email:

"i've decided for my next guitar, hopefully soon...i'm not happy with the 57', i think i'm going to try and bring it to a music shop someplace close, the neck feels sticky and dirty even after i clean it, doesn't seem right, and yes i have been cleaning it correctly, meguiars stuff, super cloth, and all. any ideas what it might be? i clean it after each time i play and still the problem persists. it also doesn't stay in tune, i want to have that checked out as well. don't get angry at me, i know it was a present, and you know i love you very much for buying it, but i just don't feel its cracked up to be what it's supposed to. i play my highway 1 nearly all the time, and i've barely had to tune it. if you can post on the fender boards and see if you can answers as to what the problems might be, let me know. talk to you soon.
love,
mike "

He never liked those vintage tuners...any help and opinions would be much appreciated...here's a thumbnail photo

I'm pretty upset, but happy that a teenage boy can still tell his dad he loves him...

ok i had the exact same sticky neck problem with my 57 hotrod. The only way around it besides wirewooling the back of the neck is to polish polish polish. Dunlop65 and a chamois leather did it for me. Its been fine for the last 2 months its only 4 months old. Regards tuning the vintage tuners need to be wound properly. When i got my guitar new the strings weren't wound onto the tuners properly and it was forever slipping out of tune. I followed the fender manual to the letter for re-stringing. Also i find with all trems that having them float helps the guitar return back to pitch properly providing the trem screws are well balanced. Also i put nutsauce on the saddles, nut and under the string tree.
I dont have any tuning troubles at all. If your son is unsure of the re-string method or balancing the trem springs tell him to get it to a tech for a setup. I throw my guitar into the car trunk, drive 100 miles, rehearse with the band, drive back home, put the guitar away for a week and go through the same thing the next week without much more than the B string slipping half a tone.

Hope he gets it sorted.

I had a strat neck which was so incredibly glossy, and I couldn't stand it because my fingers just stuck all the time - but I've heard it goes away with time. I've also heard that by gently rubbing the neck/fb with finest grade 0000 wire wool, it sorts it out!!

After much discussion back and forth, my son has decided to put his 57 Hot Rod up for sale...I was against it, but it's his guitar. While it's for sale, he has bought himself a 2006 Gibson CS-336 plaintop in vintage sunburst. He's really happy with it...loves the tone...Chet, don't you have one? We've both always liked it from the first time we tried it out one day at Rudy's in NYC.
