Hello all,

I'm currently researching buying a humbucker equipped strat to compliment my American Standard SSS.

I'm really having difficulty deciding which one to pick though and hoped maybe some of you learned fellows (and ladies of course) would be able to offer some sound advice.

I kind of play Radiohead type stuff, mixed in with rock/bluesy bits (Any chance of a Johnny Greenwood signature Tele please Fender?) and want a strat that's capable of throwing down some big distorted, mangled tones.

So far I'm looking at the US Standard HSS, US Deluxe HSS, '57 Hotrod, and the Clapton Strat. Does anyone have any opinion on how these would handle that type of music?

I know the clapton is technically SSS, but the mid boost sounds like it could emulate a HB - is that the case?

Thanks for your help,

Martyn

The clapton does indeed emulate 3 humbuckers with the boost on full however they lack the definition of a humbucker. I own 2 strats ones got the clapton midboost installed the other is a 57hotrod. I prefer the hotrod the dimarzio tonezone is a pickup to behold and pairs up with the scn's perfectly. The vintage noiseless in the clapton can be very brittle. I find when i've been playing it that i have to reset my amp dials whenever i plug anything else into it. ZZDOC had a customshop clapton with SCN's in. Now i bet that guitar had a more usable sound with the boost on zero

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think a regular Am Strat with a retro fitted Dimarzio would be a good option then?

Sorry,

I also meant to include the Billy Corgan signature Strat on the list.

I'm not too bothered about a trem, and it seems to have three really hot / humbucker pickups in it. Anyone know if it's versatile enough to be a general rock guitar rather than just good for Smashing Pumpkins stuff?

It depends on the dimarzio's fitted. paf pro's are great for soft rock and some blues. superdistortions are good for little outside metal and punk. As are fs1's and fs2's. The tonezones a versatile pickup neither too heavy or light a bit like a p90 without the raspiness.

I've had good luck using the Seymour Duncan Lil 59 and the Jr. JB in the bridge positions. That way you don't have to swap pickguards and do any routing on the guitar. Both cost around $79 each.
