At the time I bought my EC Strat the press said it was basically a '57 re-issue with a special neck and the preamp. I have a pewter one.
The wammy bar remains blocked as rec'd from the factory. The whammy hardware ie; the tremelo block etc. is all as it came; 5 springs on the claw and the block is super thick in comparison to the MIMS and others I have seen. I did go to the noiseless when EC did but still have the original Lace Gold sensors. I have bever had to have the guitar set up; I use the same strings that came on it; for that matter I use the same ones on all 7 electrics I own; (except the Fender 12 string strat) I like the strings and it makes having extra sets around way easier than trying to figure out what goes where. I use Addamaa on the acoustics.
I can get any 3 coil sound I want out my EC through my 50 wayy DSL Marshall so have no fear buying a EC.

doc, re: sizing comparisons. You said the '57 and the '57 hot rod were not the same neck - which were you saying was 'slimmer'. and to be sure, what do we mean by 'slimmer'. do we mean not as thick front to back? does 'taper' refer to the amount of or hardness of the "V", meaning the more taper the harder the "V"? I think i have a decent idea of what i want to feel just not a good sense of the terminology yet.

Im still calling around to shops in my area but no dice on finding a CS clapton yet - let alone a AV '57 and '57 reissue in the same place. I suspect being able to try all at the same time (or even all period) is going to be difficult.

I am in the San Fran bay area - if anyone happens to know of a guitar mecca that I havent somehow found already.

You guys have been really, really helpful so far. i just want to thank you for your patience and time in trying to help me out. I almost feel guilty in some way....a hack like me availing himself of all this expertise on here. At any rate, it is MUCH appreciated!

dont tell me doc has grown weary of my incessant questions already??:)

I don't think so that's not like Doc. He must be at lunch or with a patient because he is off line right now. I can't help on the Clapton as Doc is our expert on the subject! :) He'll be back!

No, but you can help on the Gilmour, F, in case the OP finds himself tempted in that direction. How's about giving us your take on that neck? And if you've told us what you make of the extra pickup options I've missed it: be interested to hear if either of those extra sounds are useful to you.

Cheers - C

So many have said the same. :D

'Course, there's much more expensive options we could put your way. Your hands and ears might like them very much...!

"Please allow me to introduce myself..."

Go on, you know you want to. Naughty - but nice.

[Desperately] - Get thee behind me, Ceri!
