Bear with me, this might be long.

I have a squier strat that I want to tint the neck. If I sand the finish of the back and the logo off. Can I use any type of stain, like a minwax stain? I want the vintage yellow, but I also want the dark worn look on the back of the neck, it's a rosewood fingerboard. My thoughts were this, sand it, use the yellow or amber tint, sand it again just in the place where I want the dark part. Then apply a walnut stain, sand again and apply a clear coat.
Second part. I want to do a sort of John Mayer relic job. The body is blue..taking the paint off with stripper and sanding. Then I thought that I would spray with reranch's black nitro spray, but how do I relic it in the way of John's? After I do the reilc, do I need to stain the wood that is showing to get it dark? Then spry it with clearcoat? Any advice will be helpful..

Thanks!

Guitar Reranch sells a "Fender Neck Amber" spray that is designed to simulate the color of an aged maple neck. It's nitrocellulose lacquer, which might not be what you want.

Hi Adam. We were covering this on the other thread, weren't we? If you want to stain the timber then you have to get all the lacquer off first, stain it with a waterbased wood stain diluted down with water so that it is not too dark, then relacquer the neck.

After all of that you might as well have just used a tinted lacquer, like SoggyCrow is suggesting, which will likely get you a better result.

Or why don't you Google Mighty Mite guitar necks? A big range of Fender licensed necks to choose from including honey tinted ones. Since you are planning to remove the logo anyway, this would be the easiest way to go, and not very expensive. Much cheaper than a Warmoth neck, for example.

Cheers - C

I have already started the process of staining. I did tak all the finish off. the only thing I didn't do, or I should say forgot, wa to get the skunk stripe off. I am using a dark walnut to try and simulate the wear on the baack, and a golden wood for the rest of it. I am hoping that the golde dries a little darken than when applied. Other than that I think things are going well. You are right we did talk about this the other day. Anybody have suggestions on the body?

Thanks

well, a true relic would not have the skunk strip shouwin on the neck would it? Wouldn't i be worn down? I may have to get some darker stain for the headstock. It added some to it, but not as yellow as I want it...it looks like one of my other Fender necks now as far as color. We'll see..I'll try to post some pics soon.

I have used the Fender Neck Amber before and it works well. I also taped over the skunk strip.

I wish Reranch would do Teal Green Metallic. My favorite.
