Hi there guys, this is my first post. Thought I would ask you fender guys for some help. I was playing a guys strat today, both of us didnt know what model it was, but it felt and sounded great! Judging by the serial. it was an 80s srat, USA made. It had some unique features too. The maple fingerboard didnt have rolled edges, and there was no backplate, but the guitar still had a tremolo.
Any idea what model it was? Some links would be great!
Thanks,
Mick

It sounds like an early '80s "standard" Strat, ie, the regular unnamed model.

Hi, welcome to the Forum.

Pictures and serial number are essential to have any chance of ID'ing a guitar. In the meantime, I don't quite recall when rolled fingerboard edges came in, but even now and particular back then there's nothing "unique" about a 'board without them.

Though you say there's no backplate on this guit I'm assuming there's screw holes for one, right? It's missing, rather than never there in the first place?

Cheers - C

No, I mean there was actually no routng in the back of the body at all. Having done a bit more research I think the bridge is called a free flyte tremolo.
Cheers,
Mick

Ah-ha! Did it have three buttons instead of the selector switch?

Or alternatively, did it have only volume and one tone knob, and the output jack located on the front of the pickguard?

Yes it did have the jack socket mounted on the pickguard, and only 1 volume and 1 tone control. Does that narrow it down to a particular model?
Thanks,
Mick

Sounds like a Dan Smith Strat to me. The freeflyte tremelo has the spring under the pickguard in the pickup cavity. They were made in mid 83 and 84. Hold on to it .

Ah-ha - I'd forgotten about this thread.

To be absolutely precise the correct name for this is the "Stratocaster Standard second version 1983" (to quote Tony Bacon's book).

The first version came out earlier that year and was the first American model since the '70s to do away with the big headstock. This second version from later in 1983 incorporated various cost-cutting measures, most noticeably the Freeflyte bridge and the shift of the output jack to the pickguard (both reducing routing) and the loss of one tone knob.

The model was very unpopular and was discontinued in 1984.

I believe we had a gentleman on the Forum a few months ago who said he'd sold one of these guitars for $850. Personally, I'd have thought he did pretty well at that price.

On the other hand, we've also had people enquiring how to modify these into "normal" Strats, so I guess there's gradually fewer and fewer around. If yours is mint then I suppose in the fullness of time it must gain some value for sheer rarity.

As always, if it feels and sounds good then that's all that matters. The rest is mere flimflam.

Cheers - C

There going for up to a £1000 sterling in the uk. I'd expect to pay between $1000-1500 round your end.

Getouttahere! Really? Oh well then the fella who was boasting of $850 was robbed!

Still, all things considered, I'd sooner take that Ebay guy's Deluxe-that's-really-an-Am-Series over one of these. Not meaning to be rude or anything...
