Hi Absinthe.

I'd have been strictly with those saying SSS, till three years ago I walked into a store with a particular MIA in mind, only to find they didn't have quite the model I'd set my sights on. Whilst discussing how long it would take to order the one I wanted I glanced down at a little baby in Sienna Sunburst, maple neck, HSS and the S1 switch. Not what I'd come in for at all... but it just kinda glowed to look at and before you knew it I was in the demo booth giving it a whirl.

Obviously, I dragged that Strat outta there and it is one of my faves to this day. I do most of my work on the neck and middle pickups, so that humbucker at the bridge is only there for when the fighting escalates and I want some extra output - as a last resort, to kinda put the boot in! It sort of puts the final emphasis on a solo...

Bridge+middle cuts one of the coils and gives a reasonable Straty "in between" sound. Not quite the same as an SSS, to be sure, but perfectly usable.

The S1 I am less sold on. It gives some noticeably different sounds, offering some series connections on the two-pickup settings, for example. Amusing to mess with, but not essential. The exception is the middle position, S1 switch engaged, which offers all three pickups fully on (full humbucker). Now that is an interesting sound, very thick, fat and rich, and somewhere different to go for that last emphatic statement on a solo than the bridge pickup.

So that's my take on it. Very useful, very versatile, great sounding.

But all said and done, if I could only have one Strat it would have to be an SSS with low-ish output pickups...

Any use? Anyway, remember: Absinthe makes the art grow stronger...

Cheers - C

Of course, your argument is precisely why the EC Signature guitar was developed. He wanted an SSS with..............Of course, our particular favorites shine here 8)

Puts me in mind of one or two other excellent threads running right now. A search would be rewarded...

There are pros and cons for either sss or hss. Really though, it just depends on you and only you. To me, HSS strats seem more capable of handling modern tones with modern music but I still prefer SSS strats because they are timeless and I like a good vintage tone more than anything. Good luck!

I like my SSS Fenders. If I want a heavier sound I pick up a HB guitar. But if you can only have one guitar a HSS Strat is a great choice for versatility.

An SSS combo, but with a single-sized splittable humbucker in the bridge position is the best for me.

I can get a great full humbucker sound when I need it from the JB Jr (and through a Mesa), and it will get a little closer to a normal single coil when split than a full size humbucker that's not slanted will get - at least to me.

When I bought my American Fat Strat Texas Special it was my first really good electric guitar. I knew I had to do as much as possible with it and that meant going HSS. But I have more options now, so I'm planning to convert it back to an SSS.

In my very humble opinion, any one's first Strat should be an SSS. Then make the next git a Gibson or an HSS. If you really think you need an HSS as your first Strat, you may want to seriously consider a Les Paul or SG (preferably Gibson -- I am not a big Epi fan). Anything else just seems a little backwards. For me, my other git is an awesome Gibson SG. The beauty of the SG & Strat combo for me is I don't need either of them to "kinda do what the other one does". They are both verrrry different, which makes guitar playing a lot of fun for me.

Just my $0.02 (soon to be $0.01 based on today's stock prices....)

GT an HSS with S-1 switching let's you use the bridge humbucker as a single coil for that SSS time. For those of us that just can't seem to dig Gibsons (I've had 2 SG's and really did try to love 'em but it didn't work out) the HSS Strat is quite cool.

I've got one of each and love the versatility it affords me. My SSS rig is a blues tool. The HSS is for the heavier stuff.- 8) Mike
