Anyone have any helpful ideas about removing the original paint from a squier guitar? I want to do it myself, then do a relic black. Any suggestions would be good about removing the paint and then the relicing process for the repaint.

THanks!

I have successfully used steel wool to do this in the past. It takes a lot of elbow grease but you do not hve to worry about damaging the wood. Start with a medium course get most of it off move to medium for the stubborn parts.

I used a orbital sander (£35) to get into the polyester then i used nitromors and time. Sanding down a poly'd body takes ages and the upper and lower horns are tricky to get round. Have you considered sanding the top of the guitar to create a key then just painting ontop of the current finish. When you start relic'ing you will sand through both finishes.

You have to use some sand paper to rough up the finish, so paint stripper can soak into it.

Put some good stripper on it overnight. Be careful with that stuff, and make sure it doesn't get on the wires, etc. Most of the paint will be off in the morning.

You'll still need to sand what it doesn't get. Some parts just take some time to do my hand (curves around neck), or you can use a Dremel to help.

It's also amazing what a 4yr and a palm sander can do as well!

I spent like two weeks on and off stripping and refinishing mine (busy work hours then). I would take an extra day here and there to make sure I was doing everything perfect, and not just to get it done. A load of time, some empty beer and johnnie walker bottles, and an ashtray full of al capone filtered cigars, and it was done!

Another thing I did with my mia when we were sanding it was to smooth out the hard edge for the rear contour cutout, so it's a nice smooth edge. I also made the arm cutout on the front much smoother as well, especially where my arm actually goes.

Mine was black...

... but I refinished it in a vintage wood tint, with three very light coats of satin polyeurethene. Relic'ed the headstock and other parts a bit...

It has a very cool vibe and feel to it, and people ask all the time if it's an old one.
