It is no secret that I very much like Duane Allman's solo on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, on the Fillmore East album. Dicky Bett's solo on that same number is also a very good one, but Duane just takes it to a whole different level.

I like this one, too.

A lot of great solo's listed on this thread, but there seems to be a noticeable lack of Skynrd references:

Free Bird
Working For MCA
Sweet Home Alabama
Hell, just about anything by Skynrd had at least one great solo!

Also, how about Little Wing by SRV?

One could go on and on debating this subject, there are so many great examples on this thread, it just comes down to personal preferences. However, I do have to agree with one of the previous posts that the solo for Cemetary Gates is awesome!

There are so many and I hate being put in a corner, however these are some of my favourites (in no particular order)...

SRV - Texas Flood (Live at The El Mocambo)
Hendrix - Drivin' South (from the Radio One album)
Peter Green - Need Your Love So Bad
Jeff Healey - Hideaway (RIP, that guy had amazing touch as well as technique)
Eric Clapton - Badge
Gilmour - Comfortably Numb (Delicate Live version)

For pure 'shreddin', which I occasionally like to listen to...

Paul Gilbert - Road to Ruin (the crazy arpeggio at the end. Gives me butterflies and a smile on my face)

The only thing you can be certain of is that we are very lucky to have so many to choose from! Long live the guitar solo!!!!

For me, it depends on what I'm in to at the moment. In general, I think the solo on Living Colour's Cult of Personality is very nicely composed. Vernon Reid's chromatic style of play is very enviable.
When thinking about how "good" or "bad" a solo is, I think you really have to take the genre of music the artist plays. As far as Classic-Rock/Blues soloing goes, you're going to be hard-pressed to outdo Jimmy Page, on multiple songs. With a Delta Blues sound, you gotta look at BB and Muddy for sure. Buddy Guy also. Metal-wise, Randy Rhoads on Crazy Train is very enjoyable. Multiple Iommi soloes are fun to listen to and play. As far as newer artists and songs go, Don Donegan's massive sound on Disturbed's Stricken always brings a smile to my face. Of course, when mentioning metal soloes you have to mention Dimebag and Zakk. Well, that's my two cents!

Rory Gallagher--Messin with the kid--Live in Europe. He really burns on that song and through the rest of the album as well.

Jimi Hendrix Red House. You can feel the notes in your heath. You got yourself in the blues.
