Hey all.
I have an American Deluxe Players Strat, and I install it a Pearly Gates, but it sounds too “bright”. Its because I have a 500k pot (volume) and 2 One Meg Pots (Tones), it’s the Vintage Noiseless Pickups configuration. Pearly Gates works with 250k pot. What can I do to fix this wiring problem?
Thanks very much in advance.

Hi: the answer was contained in your question. Replace the pots with 250k ones.

Strats normally have 250k pots because otherwise single coils sound far too bright. People who actually want a brighter sound sometimes fit higher value pots to obtain it.

In your case, regardless of what kind of pickup you have, if it sounds too bright, fit pots of a lower value. 1meg pots in particular really need pulling out in this case, I would have thought.

Time to get soldering...

Hi, I’m very thankful by your aid. But I have left a doubt. If I choose to change the volume pot from 500k to 250k, will affect this change to the sound of the noiseless pickups?

Yes.

It is unfortunate, but you may just have the wrong combination of pickups for the sound you want. They are all nice ones, but perhaps they don't go together in the right way for your particular requirements.

However. I'm at the frontier of my electrical knowledge here, but I'm wondering whether you could just replace the tone pot attached to that Pearly Gates pickup first. 1meg is a very high value pot in any situation. Try replacing that one with a 500k or 250k and see if that solves your difficulty.

If not, then I'm afraid you need to replace them all with 250k pots. After all, Noiseless pickups sound very nice with 250s, and it will tame that Pearly Gates for you...

A few bucks for some new pots: give it a try.

Cheers - C
