I took off the backplate on my '08 American Standard and found black springs. Very insignificant point yet I thought the standard was silver/metal colored. Just an observation...

Black springs and silver have somewhat different tensions. Black is about 10 percent stronger, if memory serves.

Black springs on my most recent MIA - I think at one point it was black springs on MIAs, silver on MIMs. There is no quality implication in that though. Once the guitar is setup properly it matters not in the very least which springs are in the back.

That's right ^^^.
What I can't figure out, is how the springs are supposed to go. Straight, or spread. I'll read up on it.

Used to bother me badly when I was starting out! But everyone I have ever read on the subject, including clever people on this Forum, says it is purely a matter of personal preference. Make the shape you think looks nice.

I usually put them parallel out of some kind of superstition that it might be more stable - except in the guitars where I have made them diagonal!

I do not think it is a MIM vs MIA thing as it is a 2-point vs vintage thing...

2-point: black
Vintage: silver

Fender has two tremelo springs, silver and black. Each has a different diameter and tension. The silver springs, which are larger in diameter, are meant for the vintage tremelo bridge. The black springs are for the American standard tremelo. They aren't interchangeable, but people do it all the time.
You can match springs by looks, length and diameterfor starters, then you have to use themto feel how they stretch, see how they look when stretched equally, and to hear how they sound when plucked.

Very interesting Mr. Bill,

I was recently in my local music shop and I asked for a spring and the man handed me a gold one. What should I make of this?

I had good results with mixing and matching- a couple of years ago when I was playing 13's I used 3 black springs and 2 silver ones and that balanced the strings perfectly.

I just checked and my 'O6 MIA has black springs too. Special "stealth" technology perhaps?
