After a TON of thought and playing several different guitars from several different companies lately, I finally figured out last night (while playing my new Schecter Jeff Loomis 7-string Floyd Rose drop tuned to "A") that out of all the axes I've played over the years, nothing has even come close to my Fender Strat. So as a result, I wrote up kind of a build sheet to start with and sent it off to my local Fender dealer. The best part is that a lot of the price of a Custom Shop instrument is the markup which is normally 100% or more, so they've realized that I've spent a TON of money there over the years and they agreed to sell it to me for not much above their cost. In less than a week I should have a price and since I've sold off 2 more axes recently, I'll use that as the down-payment to get the build process going. The build/description list looks like this:

Mike,

Here’s the idea behind the Fender Custom Shop Strat. If there’s anything that I miss or overlook, then just let me know…

1. Body – Select Alder (No pickguard), scallop upper and lower horns.
2. Neck – Modern “C” shape with 22 Jumbo frets and no position markers. Extra hard fret wire. Bolt-on neck with shaved-down heel joint.
3. Neck material – Bird’s eye maple neck and fretboard.
4. Black side dot markers on the top of the neck and the fancy Fender “F” (in Red Chrome) at the 12th fret overlaying to the 11th and 13th frets.
5. Headstock – Extra large reversed (bird’s eye maple) with Grover tuners. The “Fender” logo in Red Chrome.
6. Fully recessed original Floyd Rose with de-tuner for low “E”.
7. Tuned to “D” across the board with the ability to drop low “D” to “C”.
8. 10 gauge Elixir strings.
9. Seymour Duncan Distortion humbucker at the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Flat SSL-4 single coil in the neck position.
10. Only 1 volume and 1 3-way toggle installed down and out of the way in order to leave all the space open below the pickups and the trem. “Dome” type volume knob. No tone controls at all.
11. All hardware is to be black chrome including input jack plate.
12. Paint – Black base with Red Chrome marbleized over top.
13. Fender hard-shell case.
14. Action as low as you can go.
15. Standard strap buttons (black chrome).

Well I think that’s it man. Hopefully they won’t kill me with a ridiculous price. The metal spirit lives brother!!!

Thanks,
Dave Crowe

Hi Shreddin: interesting spec list!

But wait - where's the 24 frets???

Also, when you say birdseye neck and fingerboard, do you mean as two seperate pieces or a one-piece neck? They'd probably assume the latter, but it would be as well to be specific. And by extra-hard frets I presume you are talking about stainless steel, like people have been discussing recently? Again, probably good to be explicit.

Gonna be so fascinated to see if they come back to you with a price for all of that, or if they start telling you they can do some bits of it but not others. I'm trying to remember seeing a Strat with scalloping in the cutaways and I'm interested to see if they agree to do that for you. Not that it would be hard, but it may transgress their idea of what a Strat is meant to be. Or maybe not: let's see.

And I wonder how things work out regarding that finish. Can't wait to find out how that turns out - but ZZDoc had to wait 18 months for his CS, so we may all have to be patient.

Bear in mind, if they don't want to do everything you're asking for, or the price is too high, then there's other routes to go to get your ultimate guitar.

Keep us posted, won't you?

Good luck! - C

Shreddin.

Playboy are gonna want a photoshoot with that guitar as the model mate.
Didnt you consider a quatersawn neck? the tone and durablity regards straightness is said to be far superior than regular cuts.

i like to play guessing games at the grocery store, usually am right.
if the your order is accepted and they go with your vision, i would say you look at dropping 3400 large ones. that is my take.
on the lower side, i would say 2800. im leaning toward the 3gs area.

it sounds like a wicked guitar. im not normally into heavy or death metal.
but it sounds like a tone monster. 8)

Thanks guys! I'll be changing the spec to the quartersawn neck for sure. That's one of the things that I overlooked. When Mike gets in today I'll call him and make sure that the change is made as that probably shouldn't add too much more to the price.

The reason that I went with 22 frets is something that I noticed the other night playing the Loomis model...Since I've been playing the Strat (only 21 frets) as my main guitar for months now, it's actually made me concentrate more on note selection at speed rather than just using all of the notes at speed, so in essence, it's making me a better player. Jumping from the Strat to the Loomis model is really a tough task considering that the latter has 24 frets and 7 strings. I found myself going back to using the entire board and losing some of the tasty bends that I'm forced to use on the Strat. My Strat only has 21 frets so if I want to get the full bend on high"E", I have to bend the string all the way up to the "G" string and it feels like I'm gonna rip the string right off the axe so by adding that extra fret (or half-step) the bend won't have to be as drastic. There's something about the Strats that have me completely mezmorized if you will and at this point in my life, that will never change. Too bad I didn't try one out back when I was younger, but it's better late than never and I am a better player now than I was then (even though as a kid I thought I had it all down, but that's what kids do). I really don't want to use stainless steel frets for some reason, but Nikininja's reccomendation for the old Jackson/Charvel wire falls into play on this axe. Seeing how Jackson/Charvel started out as a Fender parts supplier, I don't see a problem with finding the correct wire. There's also some other details that I forgot to add like a 25 1/2" scale length, but I would imagine that they'll want to talk to me BEFORE any of the work would be started. Just like Nikininja I don't like the shorter scale length of the LP's and such as the strings feel like there's no string tension to them at all. I'm willing to pay $3,000 or so for it, so hopefully the quote doesn't come back at $5,000 plus or I'll have to can the idea and that would make me sad.

Here's to ya brothers!!! Cheers!!!

:P :P :P :P :P :P :P

That design blueprint based upon what we've been told via posts on the Custom Shop Forum (look for them) speaks to a Masterbuilt guitar as I see it, and I would say that a $5K list would be closer.

Your vision and what you have historically shared with us about yourself as a player and your expectations, demands that you be one on one with the luthier.

Take heed from my own experience in this regard. Good luck

Keep us posted.

Doc

$ 5 k ?
You're well under for a one-off Doc,
Just consider $ 8 000 at least if the buyer would consider some compromises, too many mods from the base guitar

Well Shreddie, you're a true connoisseur of the guitar world.

I get the impression from all of your posts (and from what others have said) that you are at the top of your game, and have an understanding of guitars that jokers like me can't really appreciate.

Like the Custom Shop slogan says - 'When you're ready'

I'm sure you are, and I hope you get the guitar you're after.

Maybe alainfrance is Eric Clapton in disguise. This is Internet anyways

CS will probably give you a decent measure and decide how much to charge. Friend of mine did not go for that much customization and guitar was still around 2.5k.

I'm fascinated to see what the price comes in at, and whether constraints are placed on the desired specs.

Obviously, a real Fender is the desirable route, but may turn out just not to be possible. If not, then I know for sure that in my part of the world there are very fine small luthiers that would offer just the kind of bespoke one-on-one service Shreddin requires. And if that is true where I live I'm sure it is doubly so in America.

I think maximum player involvement is one of the key features of this kind of project, and as people more knowledgeable in this area are saying that may have to mean Masterbuilt, as far as Fender are concerned. That's pricey...

Highly interested to see where this project goes...

Cheers - C
