What action height do you prefer when measured at the 17 fret and why?
Also what measurements are considered high medium and low action? I assume fenders specs of 1.6mm is medium action but not sure.

The action on my nr.1 strat is around 2.4 mm. That is a slightly above the recommended height. That is with a deadstrait neck, I can't go any lower without fretting out.

btw. In the owner manuals the rec. setting is 2 mm - 5/64" on high E-G and 3/32 on A and lower E.
I personally think that is as low as you should go on a 9,5" fretboard-

as stated above i find a 2mm high E about as low as i want to go. I usually set a guitar up for slide at 5-7mm which i would consider high but low enough to fret comfortably.
A guy i know has a John Birch V from 1980 that has a 0.5mm to 1 mm action from 1st to 22nd fret on all strings. It doesnt buzz and sounds superb. No one does necks like Birch anywhere.

I've seen Strats in the store with low action and absolutely no buzzing and I can't figure out why because I have to use at least standard action (5/64"-4/64") to escape very, very slight buzzing at only several neck locations and my neck is very straight and frets are perfect height. Neck relief is acceptable at .009 (high E) - .012 (low E).

I'm relatively happy with my current trail and error action setup. Just recently upgraded my Peterson Strobosoft virtual tuner to 2.0 with VST and the intonation is dead on!

I'm considering this route to get a bit more scientific control and repeatability: http://www.stewmac.com/shopby/product/0353

I have been trying to get my action to around 1.6 mm but I get some fret buzz that I can hear through the amp.
At 2mm I don't get any fret buzz. How can Fender recommend 1.6mm when you get all that buzz? My neck releif is set to .010 and my strings are 10's

My 2 cents: The lighter the gauge of string and closer the setup the lighter your touch needs to be on the board.

I played acoustic for years before I got the Strat fever. When I first started playing the Strat I played it like I was running down the stairs in a pair of oversized Army boots. My poor baby...

Play gently...gently... into the night
Just look like you're killing yourself to get that sound.

Majority of music stores in the uk are kept at perfect 21C. Said to be the optimum temperature for wooden instruments.
