Hey guys, thanks for checking the topic.

I have been playing guitar for about five years now, and currently own a Standard Stratocaster MIM.
I came to the conclusion that I need a new guitar, as I feel I am near the skill needed to play Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson. (I know, I'm a beginner, don't hate :P)

Cost.. is not necessarily a problem. But why spend more money then I need to, you know? Basically, I am seeking answers to these questions:

--Real noticeable perks in quality- like the sound it has both plugged in and not plugged in; which sounds better, in your opinion.

--The exact purpose of the S1 switching system? Is this really worth the extra couple hundred? Or is it in the nut as well?

--The style of music you think the S1 applies to. Again, by amateur-ness is showing. >.<

Basically, a personal rundown of which would be the better buy.. Many thanks to whoever can give me a response!!!

I just looked at the deluxe models and none of them have the S1 switching system ... anyway they are nice guitars but I wouldnt buy them ... I would buy a new standard and with the extra 200 bucks I would buy a nice set of pickups and I think that would be much better but thats just mee :D

All the refined features found on the American Deluxe Stratocaster® guitar, but brimming with beefy tone thanks to a Fender DH-1"! humbucking pickup, S-1"! switching system and LSR Roller Nut with locking machine heads. The two Samarium Cobalt Noiseless"! pickups (neck and middle) are wound extra-hot for proper balance with the humbucking pickup.

;) That's from the Delux HSS page. Alright, that is good to hear, thanks! Could you elaborate as to:
1) Why it isn't worth it in your opinion.
and
2) What pickups? Got a link(s)?

Ok you are talking about the american deluxe ok cool I thought you were talking about the MIM deluxe :P since you said you own a MIM standard and the extra 200 bucks i figured MIM DELUXE lol anywayyyy
ok the american deluxe well I never played one but Im sure it is a fantastic axe and I dont think the pickups on that one are bad at all ...
so I cant really tell .....speaking of pickups I am an EMG fan I have only EMGS on my guitars .... i own two strats one american and one mexican .. I have in the mexican an EMG 81 in the bridge and two EMG SA's in middle and neck position ... and it sounds amazingly nice... I also changed the nut in that guitar from a syntetic bone nut to a graphtech nut and it is just really nice now ... on my american one i also installed EMGS an 81 in the neck and SA in the middle and an 89 in the neck which is switchable to single coil SA and kind of a humbucker 85 so with that guitar I am able to get actually any sound ... its pretty cool .. but hey I know there are good pickups outthere I am just a fan of EMGS but it all depends on you so I d suggest you try them out first :D ......

I began that way with a lower end strat and started changing things like pups, saddles, tuners out to try to get a sound I really liked.
Then I looked at the cost of experimenting said yikes, and sold it off to buy the Am dlx I have now.
I wandered a lot of stores and tried a huge numbers of axes until I found the one that felt the best to me and I really liked the sound of.
It seems each is individual and different guitars of the same model can feel and sound completely different.

After a year I still don't feel any need to alter it. (Only change I made to it is I did add a couple of springs to harden the trem action)

I guess for some people making the alterations are all part of the fun, I'd just rather pick it up and play.

My AD found me; I wasn't even looking for a new guitar. I was trying a new amp and picked it off the wall to play through the amp, wound-up loving the strat and buying is as well as the amp I had tried out!

The SCN pickups are as good-sounding as anything out there and they are definitely quieter than just about any other single coil made. The neck feels great; mine is maple and has the satin finish with gloss on the headstock face. The Sperzel locking tuners and LSR roller nut negate most of the tuning problems associated with strats, and the S1 gives you pickup combinations that an ordinary 5 way switch can't Hum & neck? Yep. All three positions in single coil mode? Check. The AD is hands down my favorite strat since the strat plus came out. Get one.

Krad, I'm in agreement with Joelski and Peter. I've got 3 MIA's of which one I put in vintage noiseless pups, tone pots, volume, and 5 way loaded on a new MOP pickguard. By the time I got thru I could have bought a new AD if you included the price I paid for the MIA. I didn't even get the locking tuners or the S1 switch in mine. The AD is a good deal and the LSR nut on the HSS is great as long as you don't go to a string size over 10-46.

Play several unplugged until you hear something you like. Then plug it in. The thinner nitro cellulose finishes over Ash with a maple neck can't be beat for tone.(Unless you're a rosewood guy.) The S1 switch is fun too.

While you're there play the Eric Johnston signature strat if you want to see what he likes to play. for 2 or 3 hundred dollars more than an AD you can take one of those home.

Hmm.. well you guys certainly give compelling statements. Here is another question, as I am considering a Telecaster as well (It seems like an interesting, fun guitar, is all. Not as serious about this buy as I am with the MIA Delux HSS)!
This is a question many people have been either unable to answer.. or couldn't articulate the words correctly.. or gave me a vague answer.
-What is the main audio difference between a MIA Deluxe Telecaster and a MIA Deluxe Stratocaster? We are talking complete stock here, no modifications.

One person actually told me that it was just a different body, which I just could not believe. This is more of an opinionated question, so have at it!!!

And also, $1,250 for the MIA Deluxe HSS Strat is a pretty common deal, right? Or is it lower/higher?

well I never had a tele.. but just by looking at them I can tell the differences are the tele has a hardtail bridge and the strat has a tremolo bridge ... the tele has two pickups one in the bridge and one in the neck.. the strat has three pickups so both guitars can get different combinations of sounds ...... I do think though that strats are more versatile than teles :P

Love my HSS Am-Dlx. The SCN's are fine by me. A little darker than a regular single coil. As stated, the LSR nut, locking tuners, rolled edges, and the stainless steel saddles make for a great guitar. The S1 switching ands a little more versatility to your sound. 8) Mike

Hey, that's good! Well, you've convinced me... only question that remains.. is which color looks the best to you? And do I go Maple or Rosewood? Personal preferences, and why? (For the M or Rosewood)

Both are highly subjective preferences. The maple board will give you a tad brighter, quackier sound, while the rosewood will be a bit mellower overall tone-wise. Both have their place in my herd. As for color, the guitar I bought is montego black (glossy black with a dusting of gold flecks in the paint). While I don't normally care for black guitars, when combined with the aged brass colored pickguard and chrome hardware made for an interesting combination. It's just a beautiful guitar and pardon the pics, but I love it and can't resist showing it off a bit!

If you're anything like me, the American Deluxe will become a favorite instantly. Better feel, plays easier, more responsive, better sound. Well better sound is a subjective thing... I have a JV MIM strat that I really like and it costs about 1/2 as much!

The SCNs are really clean, almost have a bit of a HB feel to them and the bass boost on the S1 is really sweet IMHO.
