Post subject: 1963 Fender Stratocaster pickups

I have a 1963 Fender Stratocaster The bar poles on the pickups are not staggered and the original owner says he never changed anything. Is this possible

Have you taken a look at the bottoms of those pickups?

Original staggered pole pieces can be turned into a flat profile by pushing the tall pole pieces down. If that was done, the longer pole pieces would be sticking out the bottom. (BTW, this operation is very dangerous to try as it might break the coil and ruin the pickup.)

Original 1963 pickups should have black bobbins.

The staggering stopped in late 1974 (those era pickups have grey bobbins).

Yes they should be staggered unless someone pushed them down which can break a winding and cause a dead pickup. The magnets on the old pickups have the wire wrapped around them with no lacquer between them and they are the larger cast magnets which I think changed in 1965.
