The S-1 switch is cool, but doesn't provide a true humbucker sound. I still find myself using it especially if I want to get a deep clean tone for rhythm jazz chords and things like that...makes it sound like a big body.

Using the middle position with the S-1 switch in give a good deep tone but like you said not exactly like a humbucker. But man you can get a nice clean, deep full chord sound by using position 5 and the switch in.

I am in the same situation. I hesitate between the American and Deluxe American (even the V-Neck). I just love the color of the neck and it feels like butter. I read review about the SCN being a bit on the quiet side, though... What would be a good upgrade to perform as far as pickups go and how expensive is it? Could you still use the S-1 switch?
: )

I would try them before assuming you want to replace 'em.

But I would guess you could replace them with other 4-wire pickups.

If you have the extra money go for the Deluxe old chap - necks play like dreams - just feels the business.

Also, if you're like me and not entirely comfortable with buying a guitar then customising it yourself buying the Deluxe would be the better option I feel.

Play them both though and what's right for you is right for you - if you don't feel 'it' when you play a Deluxe but do feel 'it' when you play the Standard then the choice is pretty clear cut.
