I don't break strings, but when I replace a set I LOVE the locking tuners on the Deluxe. But these can be added to a Standard once you get it home through parts packages. Otherwise, the abalone fret dots are cool, but make me hungry for seafood ....

i like the american strat becaue its simple. but does it have the S-1 switching? i dont really like the inlays in the deluxe, i love the ones in the american. You can add the locking tuners on the american if u want. I want a HSS american. But can u get the chrome silver or sage green paintjob with a black pickguard, S-1 switching and a maple neck with an american?

I prefer my American Deluxe to the two American Series I had. It is a great guitar. Nothing I can really describe in quantitative terms....just has the mojo.

I have both the american and the delux fat (HSS) strats. I love both of them after upgrading the american to locking tuners and new pickguard. the original pickguard was too bright white for my taste. Originally, i liked the delux's pickup's better (noizless) and thought about replacing the american pickups, but after playing it for a month, I have grown to like the sound of the american. One has to keep the selector in the 2 or 4 position to eliminate the annoying 60hz hum though.

I own a 1995 American Deluxe with 3 gold lace sensors. Sort of a cross between the Jeff Beck And Clapton guitars from back then. My favorite axe. I also recently purchased an American Deluxe HSS with the SCn pickups and the S-1 switch. Tone is great but I have had problems getting the right string height setup. May have gotten a lemon as far as the neck goes. Never been satisfied with the string height after numerous setups and my warranty has ran out. I didn't play it a whole lot the first year I had it so didn't really get noticable till it got really bad.

The thing with the locking tuners is that they don't grab well with a .46 and bigger string. I bought a set of those new David Gilmour strings and the 6th is a .48. The lock nut wouldn't grab it and I had to take it back and get a .46 and the nut barely grabbed that one. :x

Howdy drizztar,

I have two deluxes and have do not have the problem with grabbing the strings that groovemongrel has had. Mine work perfectly.

The clincher for me was two things, the rounded neck sides make for a very comfortable feeling right out of the box, and the "sculpted heal" makes it easier to reach the upper frets.

The S-1 is subjective, but I dig the SCN's and the combinations the switching allows.

What size 6th string do you use?

I forgot to mention that, I use a 9 - .42 set, so maybe thats why I haven't experienced the problem you describe.

Thanks for pointing that out.

That's it bro. Like I said the .46's are ok but you can only thread it in a little bit.

Have you thought of putting the 48 back on, only ignoring the locking tuner on that string, & just put it on the regular way? You could also tighten it up "somewhat" for added strength with the locking tuner, even though it won't work well enough by itself.

I'm not a fan of the locking tuners. I much prefer the vintage slotted tuners. Fast string changes, no problems with slippage if done right.

The .48's are too big for my liking anyway. I've found no big difference in tone with big strings. .46's are even a little bigger than I like for the 6th string.

It's worth the extra money. I got a 2007 a couple of months ago and the neck is like butter. Locking tuners are okay, but I don't notice much of a difference (they look the same from the front too).

This guitar screams though, sometimes I give myself goosebumps while soloing.

The S-1 switch is cool, but doesn't provide a true humbucker sound. I still find myself using it especially if I want to get a deep clean tone for rhythm jazz chords and things like that...makes it sound like a big body.

The SCN noiseless pickups are great. Very little hum and they can still get really dirty at loud volume.

You won't be disappointed with the deluxe.
