Well, I think I got a case of what everybody here's calling GAS, and I'm contemplating getting my hands on a 57 vintage reissue...ONLY PROBLEM IS, there isn't any around here I can play first, and my shop is telling me even Fender doesn't have any ready to ship right now....so I'm concerned with the idea of paying for and buying a guitar "sight unseen" and excited about it at the same time...I just don't know, though...its a lot of money...Can anybody here tell me how it compares to the 50's classic series other than the paint job difference? Any input right now would help, I think...I guess I just need to know if I'm crazy or not about this being worth it...

Hi, Popsbpython. The most important question is, have you played V-necks before, and how do you feel about them? If you like them, then I can't see where you can go wrong with that Vintage '57: it's a great guitar and should be very well built at the price. But if you don't know that neck then find one somewhere to try first, cos it may give you a bit of a surprise if you aren't expecting it.

Opinions differ here on the buying sight-unseen issue. Personally, I'd never do it, because things like the grain of the timber are so important to me, along with the usual stuff such as fret dressing.

But there's others who hate the idea of buying a guitar that's been hanging on the wall of a guitar shop, because who knows who else's grubby hands have been all over it? Those folks always prefer to try - and then order an untouched one, which means sight-unseen.

And of course, if you buy a Custom Shop guitar (I never have) then by definition you have to purchase sight-unseen - and there's certain gentlemen here for whom that hasn't always worked out.

Complicated, ain't it?

Always a problem, sight unseen...yet my three basses were all acquired this way, and I've been very lucky. Given the choice, I go for fondling the goods first every time...

I bought my 57 reissue online about 4 years ago. I loved it! She was in her case boxed up. In fact, I was told not to open the case for 24 hours to let it get use to the air in my region. I was fine going from a C neck to V neck. You really only feel the V shape on the first 5 frets... moving up the fretboard I don't notice anything. I later plan on buying a 62 Reissue Jaguar the same way!

Thanks for the advice, everybody; its good to get a nice variety of opinions. I think what appeals most to me in the 57 reissue is the nitro finish. I actually have one of the 50's classic series, and don't get me wrong, its a WONDERFUL guitar, and I love the v shaped neck, and it sounds painfully sweet. I accidentally dropped it a couple weeks ago, however (I swear on my life this was unintentional), and where the paint shoulda been chipped away to bare wood, it chipped down to....more finish. I don't want to be one of those "its not a real strat if its not American" guys, but man, it sure is nice when you play a guitar to know that you're playing something thats wood, not just a thick shell of plastic with some wood somewhere underneath...its probably all subjective, though...what do you think?

your not playing a real strat if .......... its a tele.

the vintage reissue 57's a dream guitar a real player. I wouldnt buy one just to own a 'real strat'. To own one because you want one is a reason you will find far more satisfying.

OK, I buckled, ordered it through my local shop, and wow...somehow my mind got turned into the ocean turquoise, and when I found out Fender had 3 ready to ship, I gave it a shot, and I've never played a strat that felt so right. I had no idea the body shape was so much more contoured, no idea the v shaped neck was so soft (compared to my 50's classic series, you can hardly tell its a v-shape), and the finish is like satin. I already put the two extra springs in the back, though; this is holding it better in tune, and made it much easier to pull back the tremelo (it was a bit high--new guitar, though, I expected something a little off), and I'll be putting in the 5 way switch this week, and seeing as how this was included with the guitar I haven't one complaint. It's even so much quieter than the 50's classic, its hard to believe. Simply amazing, and I can't wait to see where it takes me.

Wow, that's excellent to hear. What a great color!

Now, I wonder if there is something we could ask you to do? Elsewhere on the Strat Forum page you will see a thread about three-way selector switches. On that one we've been debating whether the alternative switches give noticeably different tone in the bridge+middle position.

If you are doing the switch swap on a vintage spec guitar would you mind paying particular attention to the sound that position gives both before and after the change, and let us know what you hear? There's some folks be mighty interested to find out what your experience is.

Take a glance at that thread if you'd be so kind: you'll see what I'm on about.

Anyway: enjoy your fabulous new baby. I seriously envy you that one! What a great result you got!

Cheers - C

[quote="Ceri"]: Yeah...The '57 has that deeper offset waist relief. Too bad they stopped carrying it through the years like that.

Now we return to the question on the other thread of "What's a Fender". He's going to 'de-vintage' this guitar by changing the selector switch  :!: :?:

Different strokes.

OK, the switch is done, and I'm having a hard time finding much of a difference on the bridge+middle, BUT, I think it has more to do with my inability to ever feel totally consistant with where the switch sat when I put the 3 way in between the two pickups...I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about electronics and wiring and what not. Any chance you remember the name of that thred so I can find it easier? Or do you know how far back it is? Now I'm curious...happy with it, but curious.
As far as de-vintaging...yeah, I guess different strokes. THE WAY I SEE IT, its a vintage "reissue", so its not really vintage. If I (by some miraculious act of God) got my hands on a true vintage 57, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even touch it with bare hands, let alone even let it within view of a screwdriver. Besides, still got the 3 way if I ever wanted it back, so its not the most perminant change I could make. I could ALSO argue that being 27 years old, a 5 way switch is still vintage on my timeline. Could you possibly link me to that thread, as well? I'd like to see what a Fender is to most people here. Anyway, thanks everybody, you've all helped an amature attain happiness :)

[quote="popsbpython"]:

You take a '57 Chevy NOS replica and drop a 2008 Corvette engine in it...it is no longer 'vintage'!

Guitars of that vintage did not have 5-way selector switches. I don't argue your preferences but...... As far as that sweet spot is concerned, with the three way you had to search for it. Set it just right. That's why the discussion about using a tooth pick to hold it set. Never had to resort to that in my experience.

Enjoy!

I have one on order. Placed a down payment to confirm the deal. I am getting the 2-tone SB. The dealer said that Fender is showing out of stock on the item - I am guessing that it will be a bit of a waiting game for me.
