I've noticed in my search for a strat body, the weights vary surprisingly.

Whats the ideal weight range for an ash body? 1.8kg+? (4lb)?

I've seen some "fender" ash bodies under this weight, and I've come to the conclusion they are either alder or squier. Am i right in my thinking?

i had a basswood that weighed 3.7ilb stripped of paint. My tele has a ash body, its heavier than a lespaul. The strats i've weighed come anywhere from 7-11 ilb with everything fitted.

I've always found lighter ones resonate more.

So. I've just been and weighed a representative sample of my guitars. Including necks and hardware they are:

Ash Strat - 8 lbs
Ash Tele - under 7 lbs (that's light!)
Mahogany/maple Les Paul - 8 lbs (that's light for a Paul, too)
Ash Jazz Bass - 10 lbs

And an ash body I am currently building is a touch over 3 lbs with no paint or hardware.

There's a tech I know who has a bad back: he insists on vintage Kluson type tuners because they are slightly lighter than modern ones. That's a fella who's counting every ounce!

Anyway, does that help?

(I love these kindsa threads. There was a great one a few months ago where the gentleman was asking what people's guitars smelt of. I went and smelled all my guitars - but unfortunately my wife caught me doing it. Hard to explain, that one!)

Cheers - C

My Strat has a 3 piece Ash body. The entire guitar weighs in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

That said, who's tried playing their guitar naked, oiled up, and wearing a beehive wig?

played mine once, naked apple in my mouth and a noose around my neck. It was a very primal experience.

Uh-oh: Ian's on the tequila again.

Ian, that's an absurd suggestion. I'd never put a beehive wig on my guitar. It does look nice nude, though.

Wow ceri, I bet that was an interesting moment! LOL!
"Erh... hi hon.. I was... i was erh.. uhm, yeah, smelling for... for..string fatigue!!" :D

I think old guitars smell the best though. My Hofner president bass from the 60's just smells great. Old wood, aged lacquer, and the taint of years carted about for gigs in bars! 8) My 80's Squier Bullet smells almost Sweet, it's weird!

On the weight thing, thats great thanks, so 4lbs is about right for a body-only ash. :)

Does that Bullet have a star on the headstock?
My friend has one and I'm intrigued by it!

Actually I looked round and saw my wife watching me from the doorway as I smelt my guitars. I said, "...Er, I was just chatting with some guys on the internet about what guitars smell like." She said, "Yes, honey."

... snip ...

Antique furniture people claim that a real expert can tell a lot just by the smell of the wood. Older wood has a distinct and, they'd agree with you, pleasant smell compared to new wood. Overall, you wouldn't want to put too much reliance on just something like smell or color of wood (they can be faked if the stakes are worth it), but there's definitely something to it!
