I currently have a MIM strat matched to a Crybaby and a TS9 running in to a Fender blues delxue. I know this amp isn't made for heavy distortion, but I just want to add a little crunch for things like AC/DC. I play mostly classic rock and blue. So which would you choose the DS-1 or Big Muff. I think the Big muff is better for the type of music I play, but I don't have much experience with either.

A big muff pi is more of a fuzz pedal than a distortion pedal, that's not to say it's a bad pedal. A lot of artists like Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante, David Gilmour, etc. use the big muff pi, but it's all really based on preference. I would try them both out at a music store or something. I've also heard that a TS-9 with a Big Muff Pi has a really great lead guitar tone.

The Muff would probably be best but you should go to a store if you can and try out a bunch. I built the TS-808 clone from General Guitar Gadgets with all the extra options and it sounds awesome. If you have the cash a Fulltone OCD would be very good also.

I have three of the original Big Muff Pi's and even though they are fuzz pedals, they are nothing like the DS-1's, or like the Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face pedals that Hendrix used. The fuzz from my Big Muffs seem to be very bass-y and warmer than a traditional fuzz. It should produce some interesting results with the TS-9, either before, or after it...both variations should yield some interesting tone palettes.

i would go with the Muff, but look around and see if you can find one that is a couple of years old or the russian version wich IMO has better tone and build quality!

I'd go with the DS-1 myself, as it is more versatile and does fuzzed out to sharp distortion, so the sound can really cut through other instruments.

But ultimately it all depends on what you're using it for, and what you like.

I would go with a DS-1 modified by Keeley. Google search for it and check out the differences. Far and away, the best distortion pedal that I have ever used/heard.

You could use the DS-1 or for $10.00 more, you could get a Digitech RP50 effects processor where you could emulate the tone of a Marshall stack for that true AC/DC tone. I own one and they're great to use. They only go for $50.00 brand new plus they come with an adaptor thus saving you money on batteries.

Thanks jeffo46 I actually have a boss GT8 that has all the effects and stuff I think it is fantastic but my curiosity on the TUBE KING has to do with the fact that it has a tube in it  ... and the samples I heard on websites are really good I just wonder how great a tube distortion sound is .. :D

Take your amp to the guitar shop and play both pedals through it. See which one you like. I like Boss and I recommend the Boss. I play through the MT-2 (Metal Zone) and it is very versatile. I also have a OS-2 (distortion/overdrive) for that 70's rock sound.

Hey, if you're going to spring for the RP50, spend another $50 and get the RP150. I've got it and it is killer... better than my GNX3K! and it's about 1/3 the cost.
