My american deluxe was stolen yesterday. The only way to describe what I feel is... grief. I think it wouldnt be as bad if it was a guitar player, but I know it was just a crackhead. ANd they didnt take the case, and anyone who owns a deluxe will know, that select alder wood is soft. I baby it, and i have nicks and dents. I know it's being abused, I feel like i have a kidnapped child. I wanted an American Strat for close to 20 years, and was finally able to get one only 2 1/2 months ago, now its gone, and I got laid off, so I know I wont get another one for probably years. Im not religious, but if any of you are, say a prayer that they're stupid enough to bring it to a pawn shop or music shop, because they've all been notified, and that is the only way I will get it back.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I remember being without my MiM for two weeks, I had trouble sleeping at night. So I can feel your pain, but I bet yours is a much larger scale. :(

That's really bad.

What about home owner's insurance or renter's insurance. Do you have any of that?

I baby my guitars all the time too, and none of them even have one scratch (except for the pick guard-I tend to miss when I strum). The only thing I would have in my favor is that I have home owner's insurance, so that would help me replace the equipment. Still........I don't want it to happen in the first place. I've already bonded with the guitars that I own. And I have a couple of old ones (like my first guitar at 16) that have sentimental value.

I think that the fact that I have a large dog, that stays inside the house when I'm gone, helps a lot too. She's very vocal (deep vicious growl and bark) when anyone comes near the house. Dogs make for a great burglar alarm, and they're "best friends" too. I once read an article that dogs are more feared by buglars than a house alarm.

Thanks for all the kind words, even though I feel like I'm in mourning, it does make me feel better to have all the nice things said. I did go onto craigslist and posted a stolen guitar posting, though Im wondering if I should take it off so to not scare them and maybe they'll try to post. I found a site called stolengear.org, and believe it or not, right there was my posting from craigslist. I just talked to a friend I havent seen in a year, and he told me he had a 1970-something BC Rich Mockingbird stolen from his car, he spent $3500, so Im not as out as he is, but not working right now $1200 might as well be $12000. Im being as proactive as I can. I dont think I'll see it again, but there's always hope.

Those among you that have homeowners or renters insurance should provide your insurance agent with a list of your guitars along with written appraisals of their values. It is a lot easier to recover damages if they have this before hand. Any shop should be able to give you a written appraisal, keeping in mind that insured value is nrmally haigher than what you would be able to sell the guitar for. this can then be compred to replacement value, if possible, so you can receive fair compensation.

Having something like that stolen is probably the closest you can get to being raped. They've taken something that you will never get back ... even if you have the good luck (which I hope) to get the guitar itself back.

You have my sympathy, as someone who once had 10 years of my life taken from me. I had hundreds of slides stolen in the 15 seconds it took me to walk around the corner of my house, set down a bag and get back to my car. It's not even possible to express the feelings when that happens.

Those slides represented all the years I was a working musician along with many of the other events in my life between roughly 1967 and 1976. And as the ad I took out in the paper said: keep the $40 guitar and $60 slide projector "you" also got -- just please tell me which trash can you dumped my life into.

The prospects aren't good, but don't quite give up hope, yet. I'm sure I recall we've heard here of people who got their guitars back when they turned up at pawn shops - smackheads can be amazingly stupid.

Also, was it stolen from somewhere that might have insurance? A few months ago someone posted that his guitar had been stolen from his church (for flip's sake!). Someone else posted suggesting he claim off the church's insurance, which sounded reasonable.

Massive sympathies, anyway...

Cheers - C

Yeah, sorry. That's one of the shittest things that can happen.

Do you have home insurance? can you claim on that?

Checking homeowners' insurance is a good idea. As someone else suggested, my agent has a copy (including pictures) of all my guitars and amps along with a copy of the receipts. None are collectibles, so I'd get the "replacement value" based on receipt less depreciation. An appraiser is a good idea though if you do have a collectible -- my insurance policy explicitly excludes anything (guitars or otherwise) that would be considered collectible or at least, any obligation to pay a "collector" value.

Another thing to check out, at least if you're playing out a lot and making a fair amount of your income that way is whether or not your homeowners will cover at all. Back in 73 (in NYS) our rhythm player's LP was grabbed right off the stage but his parents' insurance company declined the claim saying that we were a for-hire commercial band and that 4 of the 5 members made all of their living at it.

My agent now (California, many years later) said that my policy would cover if I only play out once in a while (even if for pay). As long as it can be seen as strictly a hobby that I spend relatively little of my time at, the income is minimal and could not be considered a material part of my livelihood, I'd be okay she said.

What Philip602 says is good.

And it's well worth re-reading the small print on household insurance, even if the guitar was stolen somewhere else. My wife claimed for some very expensive glasses she broke while on vacation. We weren't even in the same country as our "household" - it hadn't occured to me the domestic insurance would cover it, but they didn't bat an eyelid.

Cheers - C

When my brother and I were just teens, someone broke into our house and stole only our Univox guitars. We never got them back. My brother gave up playing, but I saved up for my first Fender, a brand new '71 Mustang. So for me there was a silver lining. I hope there is one for you.

Man that sucks. I hope the police catch the SOB that stole your guitar. Check that home-owners/renters insurance thing. Hope you get your guitar back or able to replace it :( .
