Hi Guys
:D
I'd like to ask a quick question on what the barcode means on the inside of fender bodies? Often prefixed with a letter, followed by numbers.

Using something on ebay, as an example;

Vintage 62 RI Hot Rod Strat Body
Body Bar code of; C00369347

In a nutshell I'm looking at a body prefixed M00XXXXXX and that is the only code present on the guitar to go by. It's claimed an original fender body, but without the neck I'm finding it hard to date or prove. :? It also appears to have those holes in the neck & under the scratch plate area that dowels would have sat in during spraying which makes me think it's a very late body and likely not an original fender, as I've not seen these doweling holes in much beyond Squiers!

Please could anyone shed some light on this code?

Many thanks!
Soph.

it fits for a mexican body my baja tele has the m08 prefix on the barcode. I'd say its a 2000 mexican body. The jig holes are on mexican and american guitars too.

Many thanks! I was wondering if it might have been Mexican, and my thoughts of it being a 2000 guitar have been confirmed too, seeing the 00. Wasn't sure if the barcodes would have been for something else other than serial-based at the time.

It has a Vintage trem drilling (6-hole) and H-S-S routing though, do you know of any strats (particularly in blonde) that would have had this setup? The more I can find out about the guitar this body came from the easier it'll be for me to tell if it's what I need for my next build :D

Cheers again,
Soph.

Its just a typical mexican strat body from the sounds of it. Hss routing is quite generic with em. As is the 6 hole trem. If you want sss routing you can only guarantee that from custom shop or vintage reissue strats.
How much is it selling for? It sounds legit to me but theres no surefire way to tell. If you just dont want to be ripped off i'd go with a aftermarket body from allparts, kavanagh or warmouth. Their not fender but dont claim to be and do offer some very interesting wood choices. I use a kavanagh african mahogany body, its as good as any fender tonewise.

I think barcodes are also used in the factory from scratch to register every step the body or neck has gone thru so the fender workers dont re do stuff to the parts...... am I right? I remember I saw a video of it...

£100, i'd have it mate. I paid £200 for a mahogany body from kavanagh.

Synkronized, i think your right mate. Its part of the production process that makes sure stuff isnt left on the shelf for ages.

Yes. I thought the numbers were the part number ... to keep track which "model" guitar it is meant for ...

I'm sure Orvilleowner and Synkronized are right about the purpose of the barcodes.

Soph, if it is a body for a project you are after just check out this page at Kavanagh Customs:

http://www.kavanaghcustoms.co.uk/prices.html

£90 for a finished three-piece ash body, £120 for a two piece. Those are knockout prices - compare them to WD Music, for instance.

Those prices are for urethane lacquer: they also do nitro at a higher price. A member of this Forum had a nitro finished body from them and said the quality was good.

Any use?

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri

Ideally, i'm after a ash/swamp ash body I can either strip to base again & stain, or to keep light like a blonde-ish colour (translucent) so I can see the grain. I'm trying to keep under £100 for a body, and I've seen some lovely ones for £60-90, but none of the shops I inquire with ever get back to me :( If a shop can't be bothered to answer my query I tend to think they aren't worth spending the money with, i'll take it elsewhere. Some have even told me I can't buy certain parts because they won't fit perfectly together (ie necks to bodies). I thought that was what a little sanding was for..? :?

Anyhow, i decided in the end to get parts pre-made all of standard fender parts, second hand. Can't go wrong, then, lol!

Well then take a look at the necks at Kavanagh too. Pretty unbeatable value, far as our part of the world is concerned, and lots of good options.

I must say, I'm surprised at some traces of tear-out I see around the tuner holes in one or two of their photos on that website, but I have only heard good things about their product. At the price, can't be topped. Much more cost-effective than buying a "pre-owned" on Ebay and doing it up - unless that's the ride you are looking for.

Lots of people be interested to see pix of your project as it goes along, if you felt like it...

Cheers - C

I'm torn, I'd like original fender parts to get as much original fender sound as i can, but i don't want to bost the bank doing it. From what I've placed in trace so far, If i get the body I want, thats £100 at least, I picked up a squeir vintage trem from a stupidly early strat for £9 (I LOVE early squiers!), but got bunged in a Mexican block for free (so the blocks will be changed over), I'm eying up a tortoiseshell pick guard with black Wilkinson pickups for about £35-40 and I'm looking for a pref new rosewood neck.

I figure, if i get the body laid out first, I can buy the neck around it, sizewise. It'll be a few months maybe a years job to do in bits, but I like slow projects. :)

I'm either going for a vintage blonde look with tortie guard, black pickups and rosewood neck, or a black body, tortie guard b/pups, again rosewood neck. The black version resembles a 60's pbass a bit in looks, it all depends on the body i can lay my hands on :) Pics will def be going up though when it gets under way!
