Hi, I constantly break strings at the saddles of the Vintage Style Tremolo Bridge. My Guitar Tech. says because of bending strings it causes burrs. I'm told to file each saddle when changing strings, but I still break strings. It can be any string at any time. I think the Low-E & A strings break because of my hard playing. My USA Strat has become unreliable..."Hang on guys,I broke another string!!" I use Super Bullets Medium gauge .011- .049 on all my Strats. I don't have this problem with my Strats that have a 2-point Tremolo Bridge. I only have one Strat with a Vintage Style Tremolo. Any Help? #1StratMan

Well, you said you play pretty hard. That could be one reason.

It's kinda odd that you would have burs on every saddle (you said every string usually breaks, not just one)

Exactly how are you going about filing your saddles? I'm not questioning your abilities or anything. But maybe your making them worse with your file job, you know, removing the old burs and putting new burs back on.

I'm sure your familiar with a bench grinder (brush on one side, grinding rock on the other). Well, if you got one, and are not scared to go near it with guitar parts, use the "BRUSH" end and with your saddles completely off of your guitar, brush the string seat area real good and this should work. This is what I do and I have no problems whatsoever. Also remember to take the two little allen screws out of the saddles when brushing. This is also a good way of cleaning saddles to get the rust and junk off. You can pretty much say goodbye to the chrome though.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Also you can put machine oil or vaseline on the saddles to cut down on friction

Hi, Thanks for the advise. Sorry for any confusion. Not all the strings break, but any given one. It could be a D string one time, then a B string next time. When I break a string I change all of them. I do play hard, I'm sure that's why Low-E or A break when they do. When I file the saddles, I gently file the area the string rides on and in the same direction the string sits on the saddle. Thanks again, #1StratMan

Yeah, I knew what your were talking about. Of course not all strings are breaking all at once. If they were, hehe, you must have one hell of a strumming technique.

hi-fi-guy104, what a coincidence, I also use the 3-in-1 machine oil on my saddles, no other reason though, but to keep the rust away. I have the tendency to lay my hand on the bridge while playing and the sweat is taking a toll, rust is always constantly eating away the saddle screws.

I put string saver saddles from Graphtech on my Clapton strat & I never break strings anymore. The answer is "no burrs ever" with the graphite
saddles. I play 10-46 150's & use extra heavy picks too. Of course the tone will change some (not quite as bright).
