Hi I currently have a 1995 american standard strat that I have played for 15 years now and am contemplating whether to get a new regular american standard strat or a Custom shop one.

is the price difference really worth it?

Maybe I'm a retard, but how can you have a 1995 Strat that you've played for 15 years? Is this a typo that should be 1985?

Since you already have an American Strat, get the Custom Shop Strat.

from the few customshop team built guitars i've played i can tell you;
1 the quality is better than any of the factory guitars. Whether you notice much difference is another story. A wise man of this forum said 'you pay 100% more for a 10% improvement'.
2 masterbuilt are the pinacle of guitarbuilding excellence, can you wait, converse with the builder to get exactly what you want, and ultimately justify the extra wonga it costs.

If your ok with both of those points get a CS, their a world above factory run guitars. As soon as i can justify having one my orders going in. As it stands i need kid proof gigging guitars. CS dont fit that bill.

for a generic gig and studio strat i'd get one that suits whatever style you play. i.e 70's/80s rock and blues, pick one with a bridge humbucker.
for country/rock i'd get something with 57/62 or texas special pickups in it.
For an all singing all dancing i'd get an american deluxe with s1 switching, they do just about everything. Their scn pickups take a bit of getting used to, but give great rewards when your used to em.

After that your only dilema's are colour and maple or rosewood fretboard. I'd choose the board on what feels better and forget about their tonal differences. Its nothing that cant be balanced out with amp eq.

hope any of that lot helps you mate.

IMO the whole custom shop thing is mainly for players who want to say "I have a custom shop guitar". I've heard them and they don't sound THAT much better than a regular MIA Strat. I've played a friends Custom Shop Strat and it doesn't feel THAT much different than a regular MIA Strat. Not worth the big price difference.

Now if you want to by a copy of your "heros'" guitar from the Custom Shop I can sort of see that. People do wierd shyte where their idols are concerned.

My friend bought a production ran custom shop strat w/flame maple top, american deluxe hardware, and a HSS configuration cosisting of custom 50's single coils & a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Plus. Around the same time I bought an Eric Clapton signature strat from Fender's artist series line. I found that both guitars were of an equal caliber, personally preffering my EC strat. The difference - he paid $600+ for his.

Some custom shop models are production run guitars and some are masterbuilt or team masterbuilt. So if you can pay a buttload for a masterbuilt, then go custom shop. But if you are looding at a standard production model from the custom shop, then I would just buy an American built Fender from their standard lines. But that's only my opinion based on the one custom shop strat I've ever played.

From my personal experience and an almost 18 month wait time which included returning the guitar to have the neck redone, a Masterbuilt guitar is the way to go if you have the financial wherewithall. I had a teambuilt guitar made which was beautifully done but did not exactly rise to the occasion with respect for the playability I was looking for. In reviewing this buy with my dealer, it became obvious that the Custom Shop made certain decisions about the overall design of the guitar based upon certain details I did not realize would create this effect. For example, by asking for a rosewood board, the guitar could not be designed off a '57 base because those necks were not part of that vintage. Thus, the Custom Shop unilateral elected to base this on a '65 NOS and first supplied the neck consistent with that model. But this was to be a 'Clapton' in SRV dress, so the guitar went back ostensibly for the Clapton neck, which never quite felt right I suspect because the rosewood board and medium-jumbo frets which were part of the design likely added thickness. I had no communication with Fender on these design issues and it is my guess, from what I have heard, that a Masterbuilt guitar places you one on one with the builder.

Thus, this guitar, plus one other, was rolled over into the new Gilmour NOS which, as it turns out, is exactly the way I like 'em.

All the best in the pursuit of your dreams, and do not hesitate to continue to share them with us.

Doc

I would think that if you need to ask if a custom or master built is worth the money then it probably isnt for you. Sounds like you're plenty happy with your factory MIA guitar, who wouldnt? There are plenty of configurations available to choose from with the guitars already on the shelves.

Ha! Excellent - that's the first I've heard of how you're getting on with your new DG, Doc. Likely you've posted about it elsewhere. I must have a search for that; I'm sure you'll have interesting things to say.

Given your predilections and the lengths you've gone to to satisfy them it would be particularly pleasant if you finally find what you want from this particular instrument.

Cheers - C

Thanks for your good thoughts, Ceri. It certainly would be most useful if we could centralize all our correspondence in these matters to one post such as "Gilmour Owners", but there have been so many related off-shooting post topics to the one which began it way back when, it appears that this chasing around is of necessity.

Thanks for your continued interest and friendship.
